car alarm idea..is it possible

Ive been tooling around with the idea of getting a car alarm. Everyone that I get to talk to sats that car alarms can be disabled one way or another, it is just a detterent. I would like my car disabled if someone tried to steal it.

My idea is to replace the ground wireon my fuel pump relay, with a fusible link. And then splice a capacitor into it.

here is where im fuzzy. im not sure if this would work, but I think i would need something to trigger the capacitor to let all the stored elec. out to short the fusible link. no fuel pump, cant drive it.

And than also how i would set this all up, with a current alarm.

Any ideas and opinions?....

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

Fuel pump is very easy to bypass, any kid can do it with a paperclip.

If you want to really deter a thief, you'd need to disable one of the engine control systems. I'd recommend spark or injection. Those are the two that need to be precisely timed by the ECM and CANNOT be bypassed with a paperclip.

Disabling one of these circuits would make your care inoperable. That's what factory VATS does (if your RS still has it).

So disabling the spark circuit or injection circuit would be VERY effective.

Of course, as I said before, a determined thief will steal a car, no matter how many switches anybody puts on it. Even if he has to bring a tow truck.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

Your idea is sound in principle but your proposed application is not very practical. If your “fusible link” was placed downstream of the relay, oil pressure switch, and diagnostic connector, the “paperclip trick” would not work and your car would remain disabled.

There is no need for the capacitor. Just use a 30 amp relay like those sold at Wal-Mart to ground out the circuit somewhere downstream of the fusible link. I wouldn’t use a fusible link but rather just a regular fuse, preferably a different type of fuse than your car normally uses. Place the fuse and holder somewhere fairly accessible to you but out of sight. Stash a few extra fuses in an inconspicuous place. Alarms, even high dollar ones, are susceptible to false alarms and certainly valid alarms such as when idiots slam their doors into the side of your car (my pager has alerted me three times to this very situation, and at very inopportune times—once when I was at my insurance agent applying for the alarm discount (I guess that was actually an opportune time), once while my dentist had his hands and tools in my mouth, and once while I was empanelled on a jury).

Keep in mind that, contrary to what is depicted in movies and on TV, most car thieves are not electronics experts who know where every wire is on every car, especially non-stock wires. The idea here is to slow the thief down. If thieves can’t get the car rolling within a minute or two they will likely move on, especially if a siren is wailing. To deter thieves from opening your hood to jerk the siren wires out, install a hood lock. A good electronic one that ties into your alarm makes your life easier but a simple chain and padlock would suffice. All the better if your fuse is hidden under the locked hood.

A one-off setup like this would provide a relatively good measure of deterrence. Of course, someone with a set of wheel jacks and a stinger lift could ****** your car in a matter of seconds, no matter where or how it was parked. A LoJack system would afford you a good chance at recovery in this instance.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

thanks for the imput guys.

To tell you the truth, I was thinking of this a little different.I have a aftermarket(painless) fuel pump relay. It isnt under the hood. Thats why i was trying to use a capacitor to burn the fusible link. If they were going to try to steal it, it would run long enough to empty the bowls and stall in the road or whatever. Nobody wants to steal a car they cant get away in.. I do like the fuse idea better tho. I thoght about kill switches for the fuel pump and one on the msd. I dont know... i was just thinking out loud I guess.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

there is a wire on your distributo you can simply tap into that and add a hidden switch or whatever, if its not a lambo or ferrari i doubt the crook will be skilled enough to be able to steal it.

Also Car alarms are always a good idea and if you have a stereo in it they are a must. you can buy a cheap 200$ car alarm installed free and that would do lots, then if you spent an additional 200$ you can add a box that creates a field around your car, so that even if you go in a store and someone dips there hand into your t-roof it will go off. The thieves that are able to get thru alarms like that wouldnt bother with your regular car. you would have a better chance of getting hit by lightning. try get an alarm that alerts your keyring though.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

Yup, a good alarm is a good insurance policy. Especially if you install the LED to let everyone know.

I got my alarm with doorlocks, a paging remote (tells me what's going on), a remote hatch popper, extra AUX outputs, starter disable, many trigger inputs and especially with a glass break sensor, shock sensor and MOTION sensor. I love the alarm.
I bough it online so it cost me only $70, Circuit Shitty or BadBuy wanted about $500.

With all your modifications to the car, I would really get an alarm to help protect it. If it was my car, I wouldn't wanna lose it.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

I can't remember, it's been a few years. The only recollection is "online" (my memory really isn't what it used to be ).
If you buy a "noname" alarm in a white box with no flashy advertisements, you'll get the same Viper or Clifford but for half the price. It's always only a matter of a sticker on a box. You need to search a little and you'll find a good deal.

Actually, a buddy of mine just went to Fry's the other day and got a similar alarm for around $70 too. It has almost all the features as mine. I don't believe it has a motion sensor but that's easy to purchase separately and wire in.

Use the Grant Removable Steering wheel adaptor and a Grant Steering wheel.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

I like the steering wheel idea for sure but id rather put in a fuel or ignition cut off switch in. Id mount it in the dumbest of spots so no one would find it like under the seat or rear seat as no one sits in the back of my car. Think anyone would find it there not really id say

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

C4 explosive. J/k the grant wheel is nice, didn't know we could use those on the stock cars. I'm buying one.

Now a days people don't really steal cars, only expensive ones. They steal the $300 headunit out of $200 civics. and alarms are completely ignored except when you are working on the car, lock it to go eat and take a break, go back out and finish working, close the hood and set it off then crap yourself.
I like the starter kills and the fuel kills but why not just cut the power to the ecm? If you have wiring diagrams such as the tech book it'd be easy to find all kinds of things to kill. then they'd just break your window, steal your toll change or easypass "don't know why but probably" and your radio. and they'd dash.

Isn't it normally kids that do this stuff to cars, now a days? Invest in a "freight train horn" and wire it into your regular $70 alarm. You'd be heard a 1/4 mile away and set off every alarm at the walmart parking lot. They'd run as soon as they popped the window. BTW $600 horn and the trunk to mount the compressor. i'm buying one for evil road rage idiots.

Edit: can I have more info on the grant?

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

seriously a good car alarm is all you need if you want more add a killswitch. If they get past that your car would have been loaded up on a flatbed and stolen anyway, removable steering wheels are not really practical in your everyday ride, or atleast id feel stupid walking into the house with a wheel in my hand everyday.

Re: car alarm idea..is it possible

I have to remember my faceplate every time I get out of the car.

Considering we had a thunderstorm that set off my own car alarm, and it took me a little while to figure out it was my own. Car alarm isn't enough.

Zuki is supposed to reset itself after a minute or something, not sure.

I have always loved the Hornet 553t (Same as Viper and python) Has all of the features of all other alarms + remote start. Really easy to install, a monkey could do it! ( In fact, I hear if you go to circuit city, best buy or audio express, they have ACTUAL monkeys learning to do it!)
