Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

What would cause the fuse to blow for this? I notice when I put in my GPS it blows the number 30 fuse. I have to replace it whenever I use the GPS. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? The previous owner put in a no smoking cap. I don't have the cirgarette lighter for this though to test it out.

This would happen to me. Turns out the connector that hooks into the metal part had a bad ground. I went to auto zone, got a replacement lighter socket, grabbed some tabbed wire connectors. Cut off the harness, spliced in the connectors and hooked it up. Has not given me a problem since.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

our cig lighters are all usually crapped out. its a common problem, you can either disconnect it from the back so itll never blow a fuse again, or if you want to be able to use the cig lighter, just get another one from the parts store. easy fix. i dont use it, so i just disconnected it.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

Update: I checked around at auto parts stores for a new cigarette lighter outlet etc.. no one seems to have the old style with 2 prongs. They all have the one prong style. What should I do about this? I don't want to spend money on a used one at some junkyard where the chances are that it will blow again knowing that its so old and more likely burnt out as well. Any suggestions??

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

Just got one for mine the other day from NAPA. They are around you just have to make them get out the master electronics catalog. Otherwise look online at the NAPA website.

WONDERFUL! You just made my day. I've been waiting for someone with useful information. I will check online. Do you happen to have the part number I can go by on? Thanks!

Well I had trouble finding the part through the NAPA website and decided to go into the store itself. I tried two different lighter sockets that they were able to find for me that "supposedly" fits my car and year. They found this through a catalog they had. Well it didn't. I was able to put one of them on and connect everything but the lighter didn't work. I removed it and tried a different one. They are now directing me to go to a junk yard and pick one up from another camaro.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

why not go to the junkyard and get the connector/pigtail from a new style (1 prong) cigarette lighter and just splice it into the stock? Actually, do this, go to WalMart and buy the cigarette lighter from the autoparts "section". It will fit in the hole. I've used it before. Comes with wiring and everything. easy to wire. The outer "cup/socket" is negative (-) and the very bottom/back is positive (+) splice wires accordingly...

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to avoid splicing the wires. I think what I will do is just see about ordering one from House of Camaro first and go from there. In fact I don't even have the cigarette lighter itself. May as well get the stock one.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

That'll work. What is your goal? Just have a working one, or save money? Ordering minuscule stuff online isn't cheap (compared to local). Is there a specific reason you don't want to splice into the wiring? Its not hard at all. J/w....

The reason I don't want to splice the wires is because the previous owner did a good job restoring this car. I want to try and keep much of everything original as well as stock. If it costs too much than what it is worth ordering online then I may as well go the route you suggested.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

I just had the cigarette lighter replaced as suggested by many and today during a ride the acc 20 fuse burnt out again and when trying to replace it burns out again.
Looks like there's still a short circuit going on, any idea where to look next if it's not the cigarette lighter causing the problem?
And another strange this is, why when the mechanic replaced the cigarette lighter it worked all perfectly fine. Things always seem to happen when leaving the mechanic :-)

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

I would try the upper center console or over head light. Mine did that to even after I disconnected the cigarette lighter, it was an issue with my overhead console...

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

But mine is a 1991 GTA which doesn't have a upper head console but does have an upper head light which is a square plastic unit I would 4 by 4 inch. Could it also be the lights which are located in the rear view mirror?
What do you think about the problem being by the steering wheel where the horn is located as on the same time i also had problem with my INFL RES light remaining on from time to time?
Thanks for your quick reply!

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

I'm going by memory so excuse me if I got this totally wrong.....

You can only find the lighter socket with the single tab, right? My guess is that the tab is the 12v power for the socket. Now you're left with what to do about the ground wire - nothing to hook it up to.

Where is the ground tab on the original socket assembly? Does the original lighter socket assembly look like the attached image? Is it on the cup that screws onto the socket itself to retain it to the dash?

If so, see if the old cup will fit onto the new socket. Mix-n-match.

Re: Cigarette lighter outlet (blows fuse)

I don't know exactly... The only thing I know is that the old lighter was giving me trouble. I went to an electrics specialist and he rewired the old lighter but yet within a couple of hours the fuse burnt out. Then next day had a new lighter fit into the hole where the old lighter was, using the old screw-on element which steadies the lighter into the dash. I'm pretty sure the mechanic checked and rewired everything the way it should but yet a day later the fuse burned out again. Kinda frustrating as it refrains me from using the horn which you kinda need to protect my baby :-)
Don't know where to look for next: horn, interior lights, central locking, trunk release ?

I tried that on a lighter socket from NAPA. I used my outer cigarette lighter sleeve and used their inner socket itself. It did not work as their socket was too small to screw in. The outer sleeve as you showed interfered with the pig tail it connects to.
