Aggrivating relay identification.

Okay, I feel somewhat stupid at this point. I had gone through, looked at the wiring diagram, and thought i had correctly identified the relays that are just floating around near the driverside firewall. I say floating around, as none of them were actually connected to anything...just plugged in and sitting there.

However, I now look at a different wiring diagram, that claims it's for the same year (1986 TA...305 TPI, but I'm sure you guys know that), and it's something totally different.

I've searched the forums, found a few different posts, that mentioned the colors of the wires, and found a few that contradict each other, so I'm a bit at a loss. I'm sorry this is a rehashed topic, I'm just trying to get a clear answer.

So, relay 1:

Actual order is:
A: Red
B: Black/white
C: Tan/white
D: Green
E: Orange
Relay 2:

Wires:
A: Tan/white
B: Black/white
C: Green/white
D: Orange
E: Orange

And yeah, that green wire is actually coming out. About to fix that.

I'm trying to chase down the typical stalling at idle, codes 34,36,54....and I'm quite sure it has to do with the bad wiring.

But need this for future reference.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: Aggrivating relay identification.

Small update: I cut out Relay #2, and installed a different one, with better looking connections, etc.

Fired it back up, doesn't try to immediately stall, but the idle is odd. Goes up, down, feels like the engine is running rough, but it doesn't die.

And I went from having codes 34, 44, 36 and 54; to no check engine light at all.= I let it run for a few minutes, turned it off. Fired it up, weird idle again, let it run for 5-10 minutes, no check engine light. Few random puffs of smoke, from the exhaust. Not constant, and not related to when I'd rev it....but I'll figure that out later.

Replacing one relay wouldn't really fix all those things at once, would it?

Re: Aggrivating relay identification.

The first relay is your fuel pump relay. The second one, I'd only guess, belongs to the MAF circuit. However, the wire colors do not correstond to the diagrams so I can't say for sure which one it is, sorry.

Lou

That's the same trouble I'm running into, as well.

For relay 1:

After pulling apart some of the wire loom, it looks like the green wire, in position D, connects to a blue wire. This blue wire leads directly into my burn off relay (position A). Which makes me think that my green wire is in fact a very strange shade of blue. It looks like it was connected using electrical tape, so I have no idea.

Which leads me to believe that relay 1 is my Maf Sensor Power Relay. According to my Haynes Manual anyway.

If I'm reading it correctly, it also identifies relay 2 as the fuel pump relay. It's right for A, B, C, E, but doesn't list D's color.

But I've seen several posts, as well as you now saying, that identify relay 1 as the fuel pump relay.

This is very frustrating.

A very easy check - when you turn the key on, you should normally hear the fuel pump whine for 2seconds.
Pull a relay, turn the key on, does the fuel pump whine for 2 seconds? No? That's your fuel pump relay.

Hope this helps.

Re: Aggrivating relay identification.

The first relay is the MAF and the second one with the 2 orange wires is the fuel pump relay. The MAF burn-off relay also has 2 orange wires but there are only 4 wires to that one.

Re: Aggrivating relay identification.

I have been working with the relays in that area and observed MAF stamped on the relay on the right. The wires are comming out of the plug on the left which I am told is a fuel pump relay. How can I get the wires back into the plug? Are they held in by clips or soldered? I want to fix it because it just doesnt look right. I havent noticed any major symptoms other than a battery drain which Im told is unrelated

*sorry I cant get a larger pic in there to show exactly what I mean. Everytime I try to upload it it tells me I have used the image in another post, which I have, but want to use it again

I suppose it's not a good sign if neither one of them make the fuel pump whine? Lol. I tried it a few times, thinking I was doing it incorrectly, no result. Just turning it to on, not to start.
