you see the court has just ruled - heard it on radio need to look more - that the police do not need a warrant or anything else to follow you on your gps system - the one in your car or on your phone.
you see that does not involve a search or a seizure.
so if you are blasting down the highway at 110 at night and they thnk its being done they can gps your car, check the speed and follow you home.
and if you are using an obd III - well it stores lots of things in memory including your speed for the last half hour or so, if you hit your brakes, etc.
ain't technology grand?

 

I don't believe this is the right forum for this kind of post but I can't resist to ask what you meant by "gps your car". A GPS unit in your car is a receiver, not a transmitter so the police cannot "hack" into it to track you or check your speed. It is impossible, no hacker in the world can do that.
If it's true, there must be more to the story than GPS. If it's false, it's another one of those rumors to panic the public.

I recently read an article that said in California they were discussing the ability to Receive/transmit data to/from the OBDIII to disable your car if the emmissions readings are out of spec.

well the GPS has to emit some sort of signal or something to get the satellite signal.

and if this is true, by turning off your gps/phone wouldn't that solve the problem?

 

GPS units only receive the signal transmitted by the satellites. Each satellite signal carries a timestamp so the GPS can accurately calculate its position from knowing how far it is from each satellite. No transmitting necessary.
Same with your satellite TV. Satellites broadcast, you only receive. There is no transmitting going on on your end from your dish.

In England they have systems to harass innocent motorists more than ever.

They have cameras mounted in various locations, then calculate your average speed from point to point.

If you drive too speed efficiently the government steals-er-fines money from you.

This tax generation is so successful officials are planning to dramatically expand the use of average speed cameras that track cars over distances.

It’s like GPSing you without GPS.

 

hm then in that case wouldn't it be possible for them to "hack" well, be granted permission to gain access to the data in the satellite and receive the same data thats transmitting to your GPS?

 

NO.

You may think of the satellite as a radio station.

The busybodies in the government can listen to the station as well as you however they have NO WAY of ascertaining if YOU are listening to it in your living room, at the beach, in your car, or listening PERIOD.

 

Sometimes I wish we could go back to 1970, long before all this GPS stuff,don't get me wrong I love the GPS.Just a matter of time before all your tickets will be by mail.

I said 1970 because all the best muscle cars were built in 69 & 70

 

a gps is not a receiver only - it transmits a signal to the sats while it receives them too. just like a cell phone does. did you know that your cell phone can be off and the way it is designed as long as there is a battery in it the talk button can be triggered remotely and you can be listened to.
its the same way they find lost people who have a cell phone but the signal is not strong enough to talk - but it is strong enough to emit a signal they can hone in on.
it is just the way they were designed.
that is just how they work. ever hear those chevy commercials where someone comes on and says to the driver - we have a report that you car was in an accident are your ok? same technology - nothing different about it - it broadcasts as it receives.
want to know where you kid is - give them a cell phone or a car with a gps - there are even internet sites that you can get on to follow where they go.

how do you think the receiver can always give you updated maps - and road conditions - and the temperature where you are going? the gps is talking with the sending unit. how do you think it knows when you make a wrong turn - you think every location and all possible routes are programed into that tiny little box? or the road conditions are alredy there - maybe they have a person who reads future traffic conditions and they are programed into your gps.
or maybe you think that when you first buy it - despite it being packed probably more than a year before you got it, that they already knew every new road and every closed road that was going to happen in the future.

Some random facts. GPS is a receive only system. ON-Star is a totally different thing where the vehicle does transmit a signal. Cell phones maintain a connection to two cell towers at all times, as long as the phone is turned on. All cell phones also have GPS recievers per govt. standards in the US. Carrying a cell phone is your biggest threat to privacy.

 

I heard the story on the radio as well... on the Glenn Beck Program... they would have to equip your car with a special GPS they can use... it can't use the one you have for directions...
