Key is sticking. Wanting to replace ignition cylinder

When trying to take the key out of the ignition it is sticking in lock and we have to push in button and giggle a certain way for it to release. Any ideas on how to fix this problem or do we have to replace the whole cylinder? If replacing the cylinder can i just find the vats code and install the proper resistor then put in any ignition cylinder. I just want the easiest and cheapest solution. Thanks

Replacing the ignition cylunder doesn't change the vats any - just get a new key made from the new lock key dummy but with the old key's vats chip value.

You'll need a steering wheel puller to change the lock cylinder - a "free" rental at autozone or advance auto. Swapping out is pretty straightforward - just take it apart until you get there, swap, and put it all back together in reverse order. Took me about 2 hours my first time.

So how much is a new cylinder. You think I just need a new key? It wont always unlock for the key to remove.

You could try a new key - but I'd get one cut from the original if available. Go to any ACE Hardware -they cut 'em for $20. If you don't have the original, but you get a key that works, then immediately go back and have another key made from THAT one, and keep the first one as an original - that way you will always have a good key to get copies made from.

This is the FIRST thing everyone should do when they get a car - make a master key and keep it a master (not to be used).

If you need a new lock cylinder, they are about $50 IIRC. Call Carquest or Napa if in your area - their parts are much better.

advence is actually starting to get the same parts as napa at the same prices. i just got a new ignition cylinder at advance for $18.99 chrome with 2 keys. i checked out the one napa had, same exact thing just more money. replaced ALL the locks on my car for less than $30, cheaper than napa, even with my buisness discount, and same parts
