Friend lent me multi meter, going to try VATS bypass

I just want to make sure I have this right before I really mess anything up.

-I just have to measure the resistance of the chip in my key.
-Acquire a resistor that equals that from RadioShack.
-Install it in line with the two orange wires coming from under the dash.

That's it - But the wires aren't orange, they are white and wrapped in an orange sleeve.

Cut the orange wires and connect one end of the resistor to each wire to form a loop. If that doesnt work then you will have to find the different possible resistor values )i think there is 12?) and try every one. But if your key worked before then you should be ok.

OK I just measured it on the pellet and it read 2.36 ohms. which one do I need to get?

Key #8 . 2370 ohms
You need to get resistors to make a value of between 2275 -2485 ohms .You probably wont find one resistor of the right value so you will have to combine several in series.
The resistors have to be joined end to end to add up to the total required and the two tails joined to the VATS wires

Re: Friend lent me multi meter, going to try VATS bypass

some camaro books i ordered they were free they had a resistor box there were so many different ones on the website that you just unplug your wiring and plug in the box no soldering wire no nothing. If i can find the site ill post it. key code number 8 is popular mines the same and my friends have the same key code(2)

I checked a couple sites i ordered from and could not locate the box if anyone has any more info on them i would like to order one im not much for soldering looks like chewing gum but i did find a page that may help shed a little lite on your key codes and resistance values.

Hope this helps!

Just pick the one that matches your key code

Install instructions

Or you can buy this one that allows VATS to switched off and on

wow thats awesome. Ill just buy that then. Since I dont have a soldering iron and I was gonna have to buy one. I don't want to get the box one but the other one with just the connector. Says its from 86-89. Will it still work on my 91? I would hate to order it and it not work. Thanks a lot for those links vetteoz.

Weird - these cars DIDN'T have VATS UNTIL 1989. But maybe other chevy's did?

:edit: Ahhhh - that's for a Vette - that explains it! We don't have that wiring harness on our VATS - so you'll have to cut one end and splice wires anyways.

You don't have to solder the resistor in place, you can use solderless butt connectors - I did on the wife's 1997 Camaro 2 years ago, and it's still fine.

Why may I ask are you making this so hard? It's just a few resistors, a wire cutter (ie pocketknife), a couple butt connectors, and 2 inches of electrical tape. Might take all of 1 hour if that. Just get the resistors at Radio Shack for a few bucks, and a couple butt connectors for a couple bucks, and start testing each one til you get the right one, and crimp it in place (pliers) - then return the resistors you didn't use for a refund. It's really just that simple, and cheap, and easy.

Re: Friend lent me multi meter, going to try VATS bypass

Can someone explain how to use the multimeter, it's not working for me at measuring anything.

I selected the resistance to be gauged in ohms, placed the leads on each connector on the plug that comes from the steering column in the orange wire and nothing shows up.

However, if I place one lead on one of the connectors then hold the other lead on top of the lead that's placed on the connector then I get some variable resistance, around .5-.9.

Can someone just explain the procedure, most explanations are vague.

Re: Friend lent me multi meter, going to try VATS bypass

You guys can't do what you're trying to do with a multimeter -There isn't any resistance to be measured in the steering column. The resistance to be measured is in the key - the little pellet on the key is the resistor. If you don't have the key, then there's no way to tell which resistor is required without taking one each of the 15 resistors and trying them one at a time until you find the one that works.
