Re: 86 Iroc Headlights flashing

My best guess is the circuit breaker in your headlight switch is bad... It's overheating opening the circuit killing the lights, then closing, rinse and repeat.

Or you have a short somewhere. Are all the lights on and normal brightness when they are on?

Re: 86 Iroc Headlights flashing

Maybe my headlights off my old 92 RS ended up on your car! When I was a Volunteer Firefighter, I had Wig Wags on my headlights, like I do on my GTAs turn signals!

My Wig Wag lights

But seriously.....Do they flash together? My guess might be an old car alarm that was not fully uninstalled.

Sounds like a headlight switch since you said it doesn't happen immediately.

Re: 86 Iroc Headlights flashing

Thanks for the help To answer a few questions..
Lights are bright when on and never dim when flashing
They do flash together
We have had the car for awhile wiring harness has no evidence of someone messing with it. Still wrapped in factory plastic wrap
Will try and do more testing tonight

Hey, Thats what I asked. Just kidding. Thats what I thought too, but then the headlights would start flashing the moment he turns the key, not to mention that even if there was a car alarm still installed, the starter kill mechanism in the alarms module would prevent the starter from engaging due to the alarms relay grounding out.

Does it flash in perfect sequence or rythem? Or is it a flash that varies in speed (flashes).

Not necessarily.

If it is faulty, it could be a problem with an alarm that is intermittent. Only the headlight portion of an alarm could still be functioning, not the starter interrupt portion. Or not even part of the alarm to begin with.

Flashes all the time as in while vehicle is in motion, when you hit a bump? Try this, turn the key to on position but do not turn on car. Then turn on lights and see if they begin to flash. The point is you want to see if it occurs while car is on, or while car is off. Also try it with the ignitoin off and just turn on headlights. Also, does your Camaro have fog lights? If so, then your relay is probably going bad that goes to the fog lights. On my 86 IROC, I can have the low beams on with fog lights, but once I switch to high beams, the fog lights go out because of the relay. Food for thought.

That is the way the factory did them, so that is perfectly normal. Also VERY easy to bypass!

Re: 86 Iroc Headlights flashing

OK she got home two cars pulled over due to lights flashing (might leave it)
They do it with engine off key on, key off or running. It actually looks like it Morse code
where they are on flash pause flash 4 times the on 2-3 sec. flash 5-6 times the on did not sit there long enough to look for a repeatable pattern.

If it is a consistent pattern that repeats, over & over....

That DEFINITELY sounds like an emergency headlight flash pattern, commonly used in police, fire or ambulance vehicles. Mine were Wig Wags (alternating) but before that, they were tied together & could have easily flashed together.

Re: 86 Iroc Headlights flashing

I'll say it again since it's been 24 hours... The circuit breaker in your headlight switch is probably failing.

From the service manual.

Circuit Operation
Voltage is applied to the Light Switch at all times. The Light Switch includes a self resetting circuit breaker. The circuit breaker opens when the Headlight circuit draws too much current. When the circuit breaker opens, it interrupts the current flow. With no current flow, the circuit breaker cools off and resets automatically. When the Light Switch is in HEAD, the Dimmer Switch directs voltage to either the Lo Beams or the Hi Beams. The Hi Beam Indicator also receives voltage along with the Hi Beams.
You can test it without replacing the switch. You've got a red wire and a yellow wire into the switch. The red wire goes directly to 12v constant. The yellow wire goes out to the hi beam/low beam switch and on to the headlights. Turn on the headlights at the switch. When the headlights start flashing, connect a test light between the red wire and a ground, does the test light flash or stay lit solid? If it stays lit full time, then the problem is in the switch, or further down the circuit. Do the same test but between ground and the yellow wire, does it flash or stay solid? If it flashes, replace the switch.

How do you bypass? I know wherer the relay is at, but what should I pull and strip and solder together?
