Battery Issue

Hey all,

have an 83 Z28, and my battery terminals have basically glued themselves to the battery, they won't budge even with Vice Grips, and I have now stripped the negative terminal bolt so bad nothing grabs it anymore. Battery is swollen and is no good.

My next idea is to unplug the negative and positive leads from wherever else they are attached too. Where should the nearest connection points be for the positive and negative cables so I can simply unhook the cables and pull them and the battery out?

Regards,

Jon

Re: Battery Issue

are you planning on trying to keep the cables? if not just cut them off the battery first. Cut the ground first, then the positive, no arcing that way. dont cross the leads. Then get now cables. probably not a bad idea anyway

if you try to pull everything out, there should be a small wire going right to the fender, the negative is usually bolted to the front of the head or one of the accessory brackets, sh0o0uld not be too hard to trace. The positivfe goes to the starter, and asmaller wire to the alternator, maybe another one or two small wires connected right by the battery. You should be abot to trace them all out.

the problem with trying to unbolt them from the car and remove them as one piece is that if the battery has any charge at all left in it, if the positive touches the car, it will arc, and trying to fumble with both wires at the same time can be dangerous.

Re: Battery Issue

Fair enough, I will cut the terminal ends off and remove then take out the battery. Its safer that way.

I will see if I can buy some replacment terminal ends first, so I can just put new ends on along with the new battery. Otherwise I will be shopping for a whole new wire setup.

Thanks for the help.
