hello everyone.

i have just rebuilt the motor to my car. its a 350 non ecu motor. however i was replacing the ignition switch and it didnt work due to the chip thing i have on my ignition key. i have heard that it is connected to the ecu. how can i get by with that since im not using the ecu anymore.

think my best bet will be to get a whole steering column from an older camaro whom doesnt have the chip/resistor?

you will have to install a resistor I think... there is plenty of info... search for "Vats" .. .it will give you the detailed step by step tutorial to pin point the actual type of resistor you will need...

 

I bought an adapter for about $17. You unplug the ignition wire an blug in the adapter. My car fired right up after waiting about a minute with the key in the run position. It keeps from haveing to replace the ignition or key.

adaptiveperformance@earthlink.net is the contact. He will just need to know your resistance on your key. Thats easy to get. I assume this adapter is just a resistor in a box. Nice clean look. NO cutting wires or any of that. Looks stock actually. Its called a vats bypass module. Heres a picture. Let me know if you have questions. If the issue is your key or ignition because of the pellet on the key. Than this should do the job.

 

Changing the steering column wont help.

I had a lot of trouble with mine. What I did was to read the resistance on my key and then buy resistors that equaled the resistance on the key. I then soldered them into the harness coming from the IGN to the vats module after cutting the harness between the IGN and the plug on the harness. that allowed me to remove it from the car for soldering. They where 2 very light gauge wires that go into a small connector that looks like the connector on a motherboard for the power switch or system speaker.

If you have removed the ECM you could just bypass the starter relay for the vats. On my 92 RS it's near the fuse box and has 2 heavy gauge yellow wires that go from the IGN switch to the starter. Connect these 2 wires together to bypass the relay. (your wire colors may be different.) A jumper wire of the same gauge with 2 spade terminals on it would do it.

If you use the first method you can remove the resisters to disable the starter.

The adapter does all that for you. You just unplug the wires and plug in the adapter. It takes all the soldering and cutting wires out of the way. Its cheaper to do the cutting yourself but it's just too much to do in that tight of an area. Good luck. Either way you get the same results. A running car!!
