OPTIMA battery test good-ALT. test= 14v.

my 86 z28's previous owner new less about wiring than me -thats bad..did 305 tpi to 383 swap--- i hired a gm cert. mechanic (semi retired) he pulled the computer and wiring quickly- the alternator's not charging i've wiring diagrams-i still need help please. theres 2 lg red wires that go thru the firewall drivers side then go to a red junction box on the pass. fender.they are just soldered together at the junk box .next i have a wire from the juction box to the stud on the BACK OF THE ALT. and finally there is the two wire top connector with a tiny brown wire and lg. red wire and i think it goes to the starter?? Could you guys tell me how to trace and wire this properly- thank you for helping

The large red wire should go to the starter, yes. There should be a tan wire there as well, but the alternator SHOULD work with the brown one only. Do you have a large black wire running from the junction block to the battery? THAT is what carries the alternator current to the battery.

Anyways, with the key on, both the red and brown wires should have 12V at the alternator connector. Does the radiator fan work that you know of? If not, pull the C/H FAN fuse out of the fuse block and check that as that is another thing that gives power to the alternator's voltage regulator.

We'll go on from there once you check this stuff out...

i forgot to see if u were online dan.. i will still write on here--im not sure how to use the message board correctly but here i am !! the red wire at the alternator is hot all times and the brown is switched.. i have an aftermarket fan switch a hayden unit that i have in the car wired in but not hooked up--i couldnt figure out how to adjust it..so i have the fan hooked to a toggle for now--i have only drove the car twice. i bought it then ended up with a throat cancer..two years of treatments operations the works--back to the car. im going to jack up the car now and peak at the starter wires then quit for the nite --i get tired easy and working tired is bad..

Do you have the heavy black wire running to the battery from the junction block?

Re: OPTIMA battery test good-ALT. test= 14v.

What do the volts read at the alternator post when the engine is running? (The one on the back of the alternator, not the battery)

:edit: Disregard what I put here before... You have a 2-wire alt and mine is a 3-wire...

Anyways, does your charging light in the dash work? Or the gauge, if you have one?

Look here: http://92b4crs.tripod.com/86wiring/dia-pics/30-9.jpg

I think that's the right engine option for you. If not, go to http://92b4crs.tripod.com/86wiring/86wiringindex.html and click on your proper engine option.
