why am I not getting any spark....?
why am I not getting any spark....?
ok I parked my car in december.. ran it out of fuel, drained the oil and the water in the radiator and all that.and in march I filled everything back up, popped in a brand new battery and it would not start.... I wasn't getting any spark at all.. almost 4 months down the road it has stumped everybody who has tryed to work on it..
we've replaced the ingition coil with a brand new one (twice)
brand new spark plugs
spark plug wires
battery
dist. rotor
dist. cap
dist. ignition module
and have removed some unnessecery wires here and there. (ground wires that lead nowhere)
it's driving me crazy... any ideas on what could be happening here?
Thanks for your time!
P.S. this is an 86' camaro with the little 2.8v6

Re: why am I not getting any spark....?
Have you tried diagnosing it? Or are you just throwing parts at it?
Has anyone gone after it with a test light or a digital volt/ohm meter to see if you're even getting 12v at the coil?

Re: why am I not getting any spark....?
yes the coil is getting power, so is the ignition modual..
I'm diagnosing then replacing for what I can...
I got to the point where I was just throwing parts at it hoping for the best... but now I've brought someone else into it and he's completely stumped too.

Re: why am I not getting any spark....?
You need to isolate the issue so you know where the problem is occurring. If you're not getting a spark at the coil, you know you can eliminate the cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs as possible causes of the problem.
Is the ignition module/pickup pulsing the coil? Pull the coil wire off the distributor cap, loosen the hold down bolt on the distributor body, turn the key to run and rotate the distributor body back and forth while watching for a spark. Is there a spark? or no?
Tomorrow I'll see if I can post some screen shots from the Service Manual that might point you in the right direction.

Re: why am I not getting any spark....?
Ok, these are taken from the 91 Camaro shop manual. Obviously 86 isn't going to be EXACTLY the same. However, the ignition system, and how the ECM interacts with it, are the same. Things like wire colors might be a bit different. I'm sorry I don't have year specific documentation, but free help is free help. I'd strongly recommend that anyone driving a thirdgen own the appropriate service manual anyway. They're usually about $40 each on Ebay and you'll save that much in parts you don't need, the very first time you use it.
I also apologize for the size, they have to be large to be legible. And I apologize that these aren't scans, but again, it's free help.
