89 rs camaro - tail light/ headlight problems

I purchased a 1989 camaro rs 2.8L and the tail lights/ headlights are not working. When i pull the light switch out 1 click, nothing.... pull it 2 clicks, high beams turn on - no tail lights. Break lights and turn signals all work. I checked the fuse box under the steering wheel and noticed a fuse was missing. So i went and bought some fuses... put 1 in and it blew on contact... played around abit with the tail lights and the wiring and then put the 2nd one in, blew again. I'm thinking its either a short circuit, but no idea where maybe, keep in mind the car stood in a lot for 6 - 9 months and wasn't really touched. Any ideas?

Let’s Light This Fuse

The headlights don’t use a fuse FYI.

Now, try to find the name of the fuse that’s blowing.

If it’s the
TAIL fuse that’s blowing you can cut your diagnostic time in half by disconnecting the connector located in the left rear of the car.

If the
TAIL fuse still blows after disconnection the problem is forward of the connector.

And it sounds like you have a bad headlighgt switch, or bad wiring to it or to the lights.

Have you looked at any of this wiring? After years of sitting, it's most probable that mice entered the car and ate wires

I have a similar problem, except my tail lights are ALWAYS on. And the only thing I did was change the tail lights from Z28 to IROC style and the bulbs. What could have happened?

Re: 89 rs camaro - tail light/ headlight problems

I'm having the same problem, my tail fuse blows every five minutes it started doing it last night out of the blue, and tonight when I changed out the fuses on my way home from work they kept blowing every 5 min or. Less and then it got to the point where it was blowing the fuse right as I put it in. I'm not goodith electrical and ive had the car for about 5 months and it just started this, any help would be great, in the morning I'm going to try and do what
Was said above and disconnect the wires from the back by the raillery lights, any other ideas of what could help would be appreciated.

The Short Take

Disconnect the connector located at the left rear of the car.

(To gain access open the hatch, then remove the plastic panel in that location.)

Now does the fuse still blow?

If yes, the short is in the first half of the car.

If no, the short is in the taillight wiring, for example some chaffed insulation allowing a wire to short to ground.

If the short is in the first half of the car you can disconnect the squareish connector located on the left side firewall below the relay bracket.

If the fuse no longer blows, the short is located in the front marker light wiring or Fog Light Relay wiring.

(Bulbs can internally short, but it is extremely rare.)

If the fuse still blows with the squareish connector disconnected, the short is in the dash wiring attached to the Pull-For-On light switch.
