Hey Y'all

I thought it was about time I made an account. My Dad already has one, kboehringer, and we had gotten alot of help when rebuilding my 82 Z28 from these message boards.

I had a few questions about security systems and items for Thirdgen Camaro's. First, I was wondering if there was any type of alarm system that can be bought and installed in my '82. Does anyone know of an approximate cost? Also, I have heard/seen of those Column-Lock/Gaurds that aid in preventing cars from being stolen and was wondering where abouts to get one adn how much they cost. I want to make my Camaro more secure to prevent it from being stolen or tampered with.

Wecome to thirdgen.org, Derek! Security systems range in price from $99.oo to $599.oo. Thirdgens are rediculously easy to steal! (A flat screwdriver gets you in the door and cracks the colummn.) I would recommend something from DEI (Viper, hornet, python, avital.) You get what you pay for.

 

My friend has a Grant Removable steering wheel adapter on his 82.

picture was taken 8-9 years ago when we put the LT1 in the car and I was wiring up the harness and the new gauges.

Alarms are easy to install on our cars.
I bought Viper alarm a few months ago and installed it myself in a few hours, only need to hook up a dozen wires.
It was my first time installing an alarm.

 

I plan on wiring up a stock keyless entry/alarm system from a forthgen

Funny thing is i already know how to do that to my own car. Do you know where to get a DEI system? How about Summit racing or Autozone?

1st of all unless your car is super flashy no one is going to be looking to steal a 25+ year old car, second if a crook wants YOUR car he will get it.

I am installing a keyless entry system from a 95 Camaro not an "alarm" the alarm didnt come out on the fourth gens til 96 and then it was controlled by the BCM not a standalone module like the keyless entry system.

Can you put a fourthgen alarm in a thridgen? probably BUT its not nearly as simple as the keyless entry system

Is the keyless entry system easy to put in? pretty much 'cept
1 I didn't have a brown wire on my trunk relay (still working on that)
2. all the wiring diagrams about the conversion are wrong the lt blue wire lock and the Black one UNlocks

In AZ where I live, the thirdgen is a HOT car for theft. The shops get a lot of money for the tpi motors and a 10 bolt disc rear sells for good money too.

The concept of an alarm system is as a deterrant against theft. The Idea is to make the vehicle a less-desirable target. "Why should I attempt to steal this car, it obviously has an alarm, it'll draw attention to me while I am trying to steal it. Theres a car just down the street with no alarm, that wll be an easier target."
True, If a very experienced thief REALLY wants your car at all costs, he will most likely get it. I BURIED mine, you have to remove the dash pad to get to it. Most thieves will not spend more than 2 minutes trying to steal your car. With the door open, I cannot disable my own alarm in less than 10 minutes and I know exactly what to do to disable it. Just cheap peace of mind really.

You can find DEI stuff on ebay all the time. I buy my stuff wholesale with my business licence, but I still keep my eyes on ebay for the stuff. Sometimes I can get it there for even cheaper than wholesale!

 

Do you have more than 1 siren in your car or a battery backup for the alarm?

All you do is break the window, pop the hood and rip out the wire to the siren.
Takes probably 10 seconds or less.

The car is over 25 years old but it still looks superb and its just an extra precaution i want to take to help prevent it from being stolen.

And I meant a keyless entry system. Do you know how much those run for?

Yes, I have a battery back up. 4 sirens (1 under the hood, 1 under the car in the rear and 2 pain generators inside the car), plus my hood has a key lock under the dash. I ALMOST want someone to try to steal the car, except I wouldnt want to pay for all the damage they would do while trying! LOL!

 

Ebay is probably the best place. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on what the best is. Me, I prefer DEI. Just really easy to install and dependable as dirt! (I have one in my Jeep that I installed 10 years ago when it was new.) Other than replacing remote batteries, I havent had to mess with it since. Someone DID try to steal that one when it was parked at my wifes work and other than cutting the siren wire, they didnt get too far. (Backup siren probably did the trick.)
