92 RS wiring issue

I need some help. I’ve had this Camaro for a while and it has been sitting for about 2 years. I tried to start it, but it would turn over and no fuel was getting to the engine, so I thought bad fuel pump or clogged fuel lines….so I go under the dash to look at the fuse and look at what I found…..

Do these connect?

Lots of wires need to be fixed.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

Why??? Some more connections to fix, but wtf?

What did the previous owner do!?!?!

When the car was running it would randomly turn off while driving, so I thought it could have been the alternator. Maybe it was this crap. From what I can figure out, this car was probably an auto converted to a manual. I have wiring diagrams, but if you guys can help me figure out what is what then I can get this wired correctly.

All I can say is ouch...if you end up wanting some part of the wiring harness I could probably get it for you. Good luck!

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

Those look like the wires that go to the clutch safety switch. In my car I have them jumped together so the clutch doesn't have to be depressed to start the car.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

I wonder if they had a remote start or alarm in there by the mess.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

Ok, so the purple and dark green wires twisted like that explains why the car can start without having the clutch pushed in. They are supposed to be connected to the clutch start switch....ppl from starter to clutch, dk green to starter enabler relay (the relay also in the last pic,) and yellow to the ignition switch. Tomorrow I will have to see if the clutch switch is there, repair these wires, and hook it up. Then its on to the next few wires.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

For remote starts they sometimes use a spare key...not quite like that though. It must be wired in to bypass the VATS security??

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

the spare key under the dash is a common way people bypass issues in the steering column related to VATS. all the other stuff was probably previous attempts to get the car to start without a fully funtioning VATS system. and not all the connectors in the harness are used in all cars. the harnesses are mostly universal so those plugs might be for options you dont have. I have like 3 or 4 plugs that dangle under my dash that dont go to anything.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

I got the wires cleaned up today. The only thing is with the extra ignition switch...shouldn't I just put that in the steering column and get rid of the one that is there now?

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

could if its the right style ignition cylinder and the key actually turns it. chances are the key wont turn it, its just there to provide contacts for the key resistor. it would be easier to just replace it with the appropriate resistor from radioshack and leave the VATS bypassed. since you have no idea why it was bypassed in the first place.

The key in the ignition under the dash turns and comes out.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

In the third to last pic there is a yellow connection. I fixed a green and a white wire, where/what do those connect to?

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

usually wires in yellow sleeves or yellow connectors belong to the SIR in some way, but not always. in this case it looks like it does.

SIR is Supplemental Inflatable Restraint....aka airbag.

Whoever did the wiring on that car needs to be smacked. you have some fun in front of you fixing it. get some heat shrink tubing and learn how to use a soldering gun if you dont already.

Re: 92 RS wiring issue

Even the connection in by the airbag was tied together and it did not even have electrical tape! Soldering gun and heat shrink already done, it was a b|tch under the dash too.
