Gauge problems

Hello all, I'm new around here. Just bought myself a 92 Camaro RS with the 5.0. Everything is running great engine wise, the one problem I have is a problem with the gauges.

The Tach and the Speedo are not working, but all other gauges work fine, so I don't believe it is a problem with the gauge cluster.

I haven't done anything diagnostic wise to check it out yet other than remove the cluster and check to ensure the connections on the back were tight in place, they were when it was plugged in.

The tach, when starting, jumps up a little bit but then once started it goes full to the right side like it's maxxing out red line. The speedometer does not move and is stuck on the peg below the 0 MPH mark.

Any thoughts all? I am a technician for Chrysler so know my way around cars, just don't really know if this is a known problem and there is a known fix, and don't know where to start... Thanks!

The Need 4 Speed-ometer

OK we’ll start with the speedo, it’s easy to do 120 in these cars and have it feel like 60.

Gain access to the buffer which looks like this:

It’s located behind the IP on the right.

Connect your oscilloscope to terminal A
yellow wire to make sure it’s getting a steady signal.

The
tan wire then goes to the speedometer unit.

If it gets to the speedometer but the speedometer does not work, have it repaired or replace the unit.

Happy Racing!
