fuel curcuit problem

ok I had this issue in the tech fourm for a little but have not found a solution so I thought I would move it over here.
the car is a 89 fourmula 5.7 TPI its has new fuel pump, filter, injectors, relay, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, MAF and ICM probable more but I think that covers the main parts. and the issue is that the car is not priming the fuel pump when first turn the key to on postion. I have used http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=35 to try and test all the wires and everything seems to work out fine. If i jump power to the fuel pump at the relay it starts right up as long as i turn the key right away becuase it doesnt hold the pressure (i think it drops down to at least 20psi maybe lower) I was thinking ecm but i used a test light and i get it to light up for the 2 seconds just still no pressure unless i jump it.

Getting Over The Pump Hump

Where exactly did you probe for the 2 second pulse?

If you had it on the ECM but don’t have it on the relay you have an open circuit therefore repair that path, which is a
green wire with a
White stripe.

If you had it on the relay but the relay didn’t activate, replace the relay.

1989? Those flat relay connectors tend to make bad contact with the blades of the relay. Try bending the relay tabs a little bit and insert it back into the socket and see if anything changes.
That's the only thing that I can think of if you have a light on the green/white wire at the relay but the relay does not click (even though it has been replaced before).

Try it, let us know.

Re: fuel curcuit problem

ok well sounded good to me so i cut a nice chunk of plastic out of relay, and made sure each connector was clean and on. I didnt hear the pump start up but the car did start right up (but it has all day today so who knows) i try it tomarrow and see if i can find anything i hope it was that simple but not holding my breath. would like to be able to tell advanced auto i dont need the ECM and save me 60 bucks

on the flip side I took the car to the auto shoping hoping they could just check it out and give me an idea maybe i missed. ended up me telling them how to jump it, then 3 hrs later they call me asking me to come down to show them how to get the car started and all he told me was my best bet was to run a toggle switch instead of trying to find the problem so i pritty much got charged 40 bucks for my car to sit in there bay for 30 minutes and me tell them whats wrong with it and what does work pritty useless but oh well

oh yea still get code 54 it only comes up and goes away ever so often

Re: fuel curcuit problem

The code 54 verifies that your ECM is trying to energize the relay but not seeing voltage going to the pump.
I would revisit the relay troubleshooting, maybe it is something small you missed.

Re: fuel curcuit problem

ok so you think that it cant be the ECM then I dont have a clue what
I could have missed then the only thing I was thinking is the wires to the inline fuze by the battery theirs 2, one is a hot wire, what is the other one i beleve it runs to the relay but is there any way to test this wire?

Re: fuel curcuit problem

You said that the green/white wire lit up your test light for 2 seconds when you turned the key. That would point to the ECM being good and trying to energize the fuel pump relay.
If you also tested the relay socket for power at the orange wire, that would have told you whether the inline fuse by the battery is good.

Also check the ground wire (black/white).

If the relay still doesn't work, even though it has power to it, I would say the fault is either in the relay or the socket/connector.

Re: fuel curcuit problem

ok ill llok into another connector but i dont think thats it because it looks like the previous owner tryed that, but on that note the wires are just crimped together, I checked and re crimped the wires but should i solder them together?

Re: fuel curcuit problem

Crimping is sufficient.
