If Your Horn Fails....

First check the following diagram for a possible solution:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...-horn_001m.jpg

In attempting to fix a horn that was intermittent and after messing with both the relay and horn button (switch), I zeroed in on the black wire. I removed the turn signal switch from a junked car to determine how the black wire might be a problem--and this isn't the short black pig tail that attaches to the horn button (switch), but rather the one from the base of the column to the turn signal switch.
After examining the black wire at that juncture, I suspect that the problem may be somewhat common. Note the pinching of all the wires, but particularly the black one.

Before I attempt to replace the turn signal switch--and it can be done--I'm going to 'reshape' the black wire with a pair of needle nose pliers (I've accomplished that successfully with other pinched wires).

With the turn signal switch exposed and loose (see the second link), drop the column and remove the cradle. With the cradle out of the way, remove the wiring sleeve. Disconnect the wiring at the bottom of the column and then pull the wiring up through the column. Thread the new one back through. The threading may be fiddly but it's doable as I found out at the bone yard.

Re: If Your Horn Fails....

Well, before undertaking the above, I decided to start at the horn end since that approach seemed simpler. I removed both horns, thoroughly cleaned their spade connections with electronic cleaner and a tuft of steel wool, and daubed on a bit of dialectic grease for good measure. I also thoroughly cleaned the connectors themselves. Probing a connector with a grounded test light, while my wife pushed the horn button/switch, proved that there was current. I bolted the horns back in place, which grounds them, and voila, a good loud horn. Dirty connections and/or a bad ground at the horn seems to have been the issue.

Bad connections, at any rate. The turn signal switch has a spring-loaded nub that contacts a brass connection on the underside of the turn signal cam. Thoroughly cleaning both with a bit of steel wool and swabbing on a thin coat of white grease seems to have cleared up my problem. A bit of work on the wiring couldn't hurt either (thanks to KrisW for the suggestion).

Note the dirty one on the left, the refurbished on the right--BTW, I thought I'd purchase new, but the Dorman replacement (83232) was junk, IMO.

The top one is the Grant version, the lower one OE. The latter is available from Dorman p/n 49319. I doubt that the former is available individually.

Re: If Your Horn Fails....

Hi all.

For the life of me I can't get my horn wiring right in the steering wheel.
It's doin my head in!

Does anyone have a detailed description / pic of what goes where?
I think I am just missing something, but not sure what.

It's for a grant adapter. I just don't seem to be able to work the spring part out that goes into the plastic ring shown in the pics above.

Help would be very appreciated!

Note the pic below. The cam has a round tube (top of pic) with a slot in it. The spring pushes through the tube and locks in place in the slot (the spring has a plastic piece at the bottom with a nub which acts as a lock).

Re: If Your Horn Fails....

Right... So i have got that bit sorted, but i must be missing something else. Is there a bullet shaped thing that is suppose to go in the lug on the cam before the spring?

What other components are there for the horn wiring around the steering wheel?

It's not proving to be easy to work out because i reckon bits were discarded when it was changed to RHD.

Fixed! I didn't have the little disc under the steering wheel pushed into the actual steering wheel, so it wasn't pulling it away from the body!

Re: If Your Horn Fails....

So I went around a corner and the horns just turned on. Couldnt turn them off. Disconnected the battery, and removed the horns to shut them up. During troubleshooting I replaced the relay- no fix, disconnected the harness from the steering colum, and would hear the relay click whenever I bumped the car side harness. My guess is a busted wire somewhere in the dash harness. Havent built up the energy to tear into it and try to find it.
