Re: Help gettting my electric fan to work on my 86 camaro
Well if its anything like mine it has two wires going into it. One I think may be a ground and the other one should go to a switch on the right side of your block.
But mine is wired into the ignition wire so when I turn my car to accessory the fan will come on. Just take the hot wire from the fan and find the hot wire going through the fire wall.. Should be a 10-12 gauge red wire and splice it in there.
Im just giving you a suggestion on how I did mine and it works fine :P Good luck!

You didn't give us exactly much information here. Good luck getting help with that approach.
TPI? Which fan isn't working? (TPI has two, that's why I'm asking)
But I'll be nice and provide a link to a troubleshooting article that might help you out: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=36
Let us know what you find.

The fans are powered through relays. Each fan has its own.
The switch in the passenger head is the cycling switch for the TBI and overheat switch for the secondary fan on TPI. That switch merely grounds the appropriate relay, it does not powe the fan itself.
Hope this helps.

Could anyone tell me how to just make it a toggle switch, so it turns on and stays on when i turn the key?

If you still have the fan relay, just attach its ground wire to the block or chassis somewhere. That will make it run whenever the ignition is on.

So you have "one" fan? The relay is by the drivers side fire wall. The switch that runs it is in the passenger side of the block below the number 6 cylinder (pretty sure your single fan is like mine on my 84). Make sure it's there and that there is a wire going to it. Sometimes they break or are cut when people don't realize what they are.

Could be that your motor for the fan has gone out. Or the relay has gone out. Like someone said before it is on the drivers side by the brake master cylinder. One way to check this is to find another relay thats similar on the car and swap them out, then turn the key on and flip the A/C switch on. This should turn your fan on, if it does then you need a new relay. If not it may be the motor.
If you want to convert to a manual switch its not that hard. You just need a 30 amp relay, a fuse, some wire, and a switch to do it. You can find tons of articles on how to do this if you search around some. Thats what I did with mine when I converted to dual fans. Ran one through the stock system, and put the other on a seperate switch I can turn on whenever, even with the key off. Good luck.
