this happened on my driver side, but my windows still go up and down
Re: Window motor regulator spring popped off!!!
slide the spring a little bit down into the regulators slot. the clamp onto the end of spring with vice grip but not really tight. Then rotate spring over the stud and tap it in place with a hammer, takes about 30 seconds to do it.

Re: Window motor regulator spring popped off!!!
I understand this is an old dead thread but is there a way to re-tension the spring while the regulator is still inside the door?
got it. Had to take the regulator out. Easiest way by far.

Re: Window motor regulator spring popped off!!!
I made the mistake of not securing the spring before removing the motor from the regulator gear on the left rear passenger door window of a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban. That coil snaps hard, but I wasn't in the way. I would have never seen it coming. Later I read about the danger of laceration of fingers. The replacement process was the same as described here, except the mounting frame required the center to be held on the post, but just barely while the coil was cranked around the retainer post. About a third of the way around the mounting frame was thinner and it was possible to get the center of the coil further into the slot. Narrow vice grips were used, clamped to half the width of the coil, to hold the center of the coil in the post slot, and the entire regulator rig was clamped down to the counter. Ordinary pliers and the grip of death were used to extend the coil to the retainer post while keeping constant pressure on the vice grips.
