Wiring Mess??
Wiring Mess??
Ok so I just bought my 1991 Camaro Rs with a V6 3.1L engine, and I bought it thinking itd be a quick fix(it Starts then stalls out in about 2mins). The person who i bought the car from says she replaced the fuel pump and spark plugs and all that good stuff. Im going to put some links to some youtube videos to show what the machanic did to the wires under the hood, then i will put another video link of some wires under the dash i have no ides where they go or even if they are suppossed to go to anything or where they are suppossed to hook up. So if you know where they may hook up please give me some help. Or if you have a wiring Schematic for this car please post it below, it would be a major help right now.

Re: Wiring Mess??
The first video :
The plug closest to the drivers door is for the fog light switch, Z28 and 6 cyl cars used the same chassis harness, so the wiring is there on the chassis side, just with a 6 cyl car you didnt get the switch and the wires arent in the headlight harness for them.
Second plug is for the power windows/locks/mirrors, the cars again had the same chassis harness, the option of power windows/locks, or windows/locks/mirrors is a seperate subharness and plugs in there to give it power from the fuses and circuit breakers.
Third is indeed the ALDL port for check engine.
I believe what you were looking at near the end makes me think the car had cruise control but its been a while since i've been near one, believe you were seeing the relay on the subharness for it, and the brake switch input for it that wasnt plugged into the subharness.

Second video:
White lonely wire should be the door trigger switch wire for the dome light to come on when you open the door.
Second plug should be for the cruise control box, that should be the only thing over at that end for the cruise, and plugs in over there.

Third video
Alternator plug: you can reuse that one or get another, looking at the factory diagram will get you the pinout, but basically I would get a new plug from the parts store, the correct wiring basically will have one large red wire coming from it which gets fed B+, realistically you can just loop it to the charge wire stud, its 12v whether its got its own wire routed to the battery, or connected to the output wire, the other wire will get switched ign +, the correct terminal must be used on the plug or overcharging will result.
Next connection is the egr solenoid, go to the junkyard and find the right pigtail for it.
Wires near the coil i'd need something better than "this wire here" and a quick glance to help with
The grounds look horribly done, of course this looks like every other wiring work i've seen done by people who "know what they're doing" and attempt on their own.
The main bulkhead connector on the drivers side is removed by taking out the center bolt, its 7mm or 1/4", a swivel and a good long 1/4" extension will let you remove it, then the whole block pulls back and the headlight harness section can be removed from the outer shell.
The "fu<kin idiot" that put that black tar on there was GM, its factory.

Re: Wiring Mess??
Thanks for the advice. ill post another video of that wire in the back by those relay or whatever they are..
any way i can save those grounds that were so horribly conneced together? any idea where he may have taken the other two pieces from?
when you say

What are you referring to? Are you talking about the thing with the tar on it? i cant believe GM would put that tar stuff on there, do you know what purpose it serves?

Re: Wiring Mess??
This is the way these sort of plugs were protected from the elements for decades. More modern connector designs use rubber gaskets on the plugs and wires themselves.
99% of all cars produced that use these old school plugs with the "tar" on them never were disconnected after the car was built. They survived from the assembly line all the way to the crusher without being ever touched. Basically GM had no real reason to spend the time or money to upgrade something that they didnt have to. That being said, I still hate these plugs, but they are factory.

Re: Wiring Mess??
Thank you both. Can you guys tell me where the ground wires should be located in the engine compartment? Some of mine are disconnected on the driver side of the engine compartment.

Ok so I found out the alternator plug is only supposed to be connected to two of the three wires from the plug. The brown and the red. But I am unable to tell using the schematic where the other ground wires are supposed to go... Any ideas? The ground wire comes out of the wiring harness and then he saultered other wires to it but didn't connect them. I don't want to risk shorting out any main components to the car. I want to hook them up properly before i run the car.

this is my first time on here so i can get some help.......i have a 1992 camaro rs 305 psi in my problem is with my cooling fan... my horn, head lamp light,3rd break light and cigarette lighter.
now everything works its just that its not properly wired right.
now my fan is hooked up to a toggle switch so is my horn, head lamp light,3rd break light to power them up not the cigarette lighter cuz it will short everything out.
so what i need help with is how do i wire everything up the right way ?

Re: Wiring Mess??
Hi everyone I wanted to say that I got my car wires correctly installed now and my car will start and dies within 3sec but can start right back up and die again after another 3sec. The car can continuously start and shut off with out fail it just won't stay running any ideas?
Re: Wiring Mess??
That sounds like fuel pump or fuel pressure issues. Once it dies, go check the schraeder valve on the fuel rail- see if pressing on it releases any fuel pressure. I am just spitballing here, but if your pump isn't working properly and not giving you enough fuel pressure that could be the problem. Also check austinthirdgen for wiring schematics...
