Alternator not charging

To my knowledge for an alternator to charge all you need is the ground the batt wire and the one that goes to the starter, and the volt meter.
so i have all of them hooked up right and it still wont charge. i just got a new one today because it tested bad and now the brand new one doesnt charge either. i cant figure this one out but i do see a semi burnt relay that says P.E.D.5 on the side and idk what that is for. by i am carb'ed.

any help in verifying my knowledge or if you know of any reasons why it wont charge besides it just being a bad alt.
Thanks

Re: Alternator not charging

No it depends if its regulated internally or not.

A true one wire alternator will only need to be connected to the batt + to charge.

Re: Alternator not charging

Since Alternators make AC I thought they had the rectifiers to convert them to DC and solid state voltage regulators built in.

Re: Alternator not charging

I was told there might be a fuseable link in the line to the starter so im gonna start there. its not putting out anything that i can see because the battery died as i was driving home with the good alternator all hooked up

The rectifier diodes will be in there, but the regulator can be external but that would be highly unlikely to find on a third gen or probably any camaro for that matter. Sometime around '67 external regulators went away.

Re: Alternator not charging

For a common internally regulated (not a 1-wire) alternator, you have to have the light bulb path to ground and you have to supply a switched 12V to one of the alternator plug terminals. The 12V has to be switched or it will drain the battery when the engine isn't running.
