Headlight motors hot

Hello all,

I have replaced my later style headlight motors with three wire motors and have them running off the module everything is working except the motors get hot while off or on. I tied off the white wire on the motors. I had to as well solder wires on f1 and f2 of the module cuz they had melted. Anyone know why the motors are getting warm I thought the module had a limit switch in it to turn motors off after reaching limits?

Good luck. You went from better motors and took a step back to an inferior design. I suggest you either switch back to the two-wire motors or install ALL the comonents that were used for that 3-wire headlight motor system.

The motors were free I couldn't find any 2nd design And buying them isn't in the budget. As long as they won't draw enough amperage to start a fire? i don't care if the motors burn out due to being warm. I can get 2nd designs in the future.

We look forward to your post shortly, "why does my battery keep draining down?" I'm sorry to hear $6.75 to repair each headlight motor was not in your budget. That would be roughly the price of that fire extinguisher you'll need and far less than that new battery you'll need very soon.

I just disconnect the battery! I would have picked up the kit but one of the motors was beyond repair so I had these three wire ones. I have them working correctly with the module just as the 2 wire motors worked they just get warm. I thought the module had provisions to turn off the power when the amperage spiked when the lights were fully open/closed because the motors are powered when the switch is on or off.

They sure do, IF you are using the correct motor. I cannot imagine why they don't work right for you.

All I've changed is the motors, they go up and down the motors stop spinning at the end of the headlight travel. shouldn't the cutoff still work the same regardless of motor being used? How can It tell (does it just sense the amperage increase? ( the harness is untouched 2 wire harness) I wired the three wire motors to work with the stock 2 wire harness. I just am trying to understand why the motors still are getting warm when everything seems to be working correctly.

The motors were designed to be controlled by a completely different circuit. As I already explained you can solve your problem by swapping in the entilre wiring for a 3-wire motor. That means two isolation relays, one per motor. Did you also swap the headlight bucket? It too is different having threaded adjusters that control the limit. The two wire motor style buckets lack this and have just a molded piece with no adjustment. In your case the motors are not being shut off at all. They remain running because the module is not shutting them off because it was not designed for that style of motor. Why the secondary timer circuit is not shutting them off after 6 seconds I don't know. The 3 wire motors have an internal limit switch to turn them off. I imagine since they are not in the proper headlight bucket they are not reaching the end of the travel for the internal limit switch to turn them off and threfore are still energized.

I go back to my original suggestion. Either swap in the ENTIRE wiring circuit for the 3-wire motors and the proper headlight buckets OR swap in a good rebuilt set of 2-wire motors.

Pretty soon you'll be swapping in a new set of wiring anyway (once the existing wire has melted enough to cause a short).
