Vats question with no clear answers

hello all.
I have looked every where for answers to acouple questions I have.
I have a 92 rs and the vats started acting up so.i did the resistor bypass.
well now the car wont start doing the same vats symptoms.except now when
i first try the security light wont even come on then i try again it comes on and stays on.
im guessing the vats module finally kicked it but in a 92 i cant find a pictures of the module or where it mounts. I know they moved the location for vats in 90 but every refrence
i find uses the pre 90 refrence. Im asking because if it is the module im just going to bite
the 200 bucks and replace it but.i dont know what im looking for or where to look.

Re: Vats question with no clear answers

thank you for the link but i still cant find out if the security light not coming on when u first try to start the car is normal to a vats failure. I dont mind replacing the module(i might need the system later) but cant tell in a 92 if its the silver box that has a connector on it or a small black box thats just wired in. i also dont know the location in a 92. i know it use to be drivers side right towards the radio. I read some where they moved it to behind the dash on the passenger side starting in 90.

Re: Vats question with no clear answers

The pass key module grounds out the security dash light to illuminate it in the accessory position. Once the pass key module gets the correct key resistance and sends the hz signal to the ecm the lamp goes off.

Re: Vats question with no clear answers

I'm posting this here just incase it might help someone eles. After alot of digging I found out a few answers that might be helpful. On the 90-92 Camaro the vats module is bolted to the back of the defroster duct on the passenger side(the grey plastic box). The easiest way to get the little bugger out of there is to remove the side window defroster duct and speaker. then remove the bolts holding the dash in place from the center support over. Be careful when moveing the dash off the big metal mount next to the door frame. It has a hook and easily cracks if your not careful. next pull gently on the dash and the main defroster vents enough to get a piece of 2X4 in between the duct and the fire wall. This should give u enough space to get a crescent wrench on the bolts holding the module in place. From here you can replace the module ($333.31 from gm as of 3-19-13)If your of the faint of heart like me you can put in a bypass module with out having to cut in to the harness under the dash. Just check after you have bolted everything back up your ducts are all in alignment. ...hope this helps some one...

If anyone has something to add or subtract feel free . this was the easiest way for me lol Individual results will probably vary

Problem is ;
the VATS bypass only works if the VATS module is working

If your VATS module has died , way cheaper to bypass the starter relay ( the starter is easily hot wired by thieves anyway)
then install a $30 signal generator to send the required fuel enable signal to the ECM so it pulses the injectors.

For security , just wire in a hidden switch on the fuel pump or the coil like done on old skool , non computer cars
