Tach not working on instrument panel clusters??!!
Since I bought my 1992 camaro 6 months ago the tach gauge on the cluster didn't work. It would jump up a bit as soon as the key was turned on but never did any more than that. I recent had and iac problem and had an obd 1 scanner/tester hooked up and with the engine running I did get an rpm reading. Well I figured the cluster was just bad so I let it go until last week when my speedometer took a dump. So I got a cluster from a junkyard and put it in. The speedometer worked and still no rpm gauge?? I took it out because the fuel gauge was bad on the junk yard cluster. So I bought one cheap on eBay. The speedo worked and so did all the other gauges except the rpm tach. The guy I bought it from told me it worked when it was In his car. So... Is it possible I have 3 clusters with bad tachs or do you think there is a wire problem?? But like I said, I got a rpm reading with the scan tool hooked up to the obd 1 port. Not sure where to start. Please help

have you checked where it hooks into distributor cap? if not look at cap you will see 2 wires running into a box sticking off it between 2 spark plug wires theyre labeled on cap as batt and tach make sure the tach is hooked up good and isn't loose

Re: Tach not working on instrument panel clusters??!!
Since youre getting a rpm reading on the scanner you know the wiring between the ECM and engine is fine. Chances are the wire leading to the cluster is damaged and just not relaying the signal to tach. Chances of having 3 screwed up tachs in a row is pretty slim.
http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19 should help you in tracing the problem wire.

You should have a white wire on the ignition coil that runs straight to the cluster for the tac. Id start at the coil and work back from there.
