My horns smell funny

Now that I've got your attention

I have a grant steering wheel that I put in my car five years ago. The horn worked fine until yesterday which is when I took off the wheel (very easy, just five visible bolts) for ease in removing my cluster to replace burned out bulbs.

After the wheel was back on, I blew the 20 amp accessory fuse seven times in a row, got sparking from my fuse box and even had the replacement fuse start to melt on one occasion. I believed it to be a grounding problem - related to the wheel - and I was right; the horn button install bracket had been installed backwards by me. The accessory fuse now works again, but, the horns do not.

* I pulled and cleaned the relay and it works.
* Strong clicking is heard when the wires are attached to the button and it is pushed.
* I have 2 stock horns and both connectors were sprayed and the terminals cleaned: still nothing!

Here's the funny part: when I put both horns close to my face, hoping to see some visible defect, I was hit in the nostrils with a strong burning/burnt smell (therein the title 'my horns smell funny').

So, is this possible? Can you burn out a horn (or two)? I need this advice before I drop 50 bucks on two replacements. Thanks in advance!

Any burnt smell coming from some thing electical is never a good thing. Usually that smell means that electrical device will never work again.

Re: My horns smell funny

Is there a way to take the horns apart to see if there is anything on the inside that could be fried?

Off topic but the title of this thread reminds me of when Triumph the Insult Comic Dog calls the STD Hotline.....
