high performance alternator

Who makes a 140 amp alternator for a 1983 305v8 CFI trans am?

Re: high performance alternator

I am pretty sure Powermaster makes a 12SI alternator that fits our cars. Chances are your car has the 15SI alternator, but there aren't too many options besides a stock rebuild for that alternator. If you upgrade to 140 amp you are going to have to install heavier gauge wiring to the alternator charging circuit.

Re: high performance alternator

Are you planning on installing something that needs the extra amps? Your stock alternator should be 85 amps.

Re: high performance alternator

an early style(86-93)CS144 is a near bolt in in place of a 15/17 Si-early cs144 is usually 108a and a big advantage is the cs144 has an updated, more powerful regulator for steadier output at low RPM.The later style cs144 has a slightly different casing but will probably fit in place of a 15si with no modifications.A 140a version is offered with the later cs144.

I found a local guy who built me a custom 140 amp alternator from a 1994 Buick roadmaster with 1 year warranty. Bolted up on the stock location with no problems. I only had to modify the electrical connector.

Re: high performance alternator

sounds like you got a late style cs144-any improvement in low RPM voltage output noticed so far?

Yeah a little more power out of the cfi, the a/c blows colder at idle in Boston. Brighter headlights. under all loads it does not go under 14 volts .
