Alternator Wiring

So I have an 85 camaro that was a tpi car but was converted to carb (that's how it was when I bought the car) and whoever did the swap left all the wires in. So I took all the unneeded wires out and the ecm. My battery keeps draining though and my neighbor who is really good with eletrical said my alternator (10 SI) was not wired correctly. I had already tested my alternator and it was not bad. So I bought a new connector for the alternator and I know that #2 goes to the battery but I read that #1 goes to an indicator light or resistor. My issue is I don't know where I should wire the #1 wire. Please help. Also the idiot that owned the car before me wired the electric choke into the wiring for my alternator so that might have been what's draining the battery. I'm not sure though because I barely know anythig about electrical.

Re: Alternator Wiring

the dash light wire needs to see 12v. thats how it knows what the charge voltage should be. you can wire it to the charge light on the dash or through a resistor to the pos side of the battery. or places like painless sell a prewired connector that already has the resistor

Ok thank you. I dont really care if I have a indicator light or not I just want my damn battery to stop draining in a week haha. If I buy the prewired connector do you think that will fix the problem? Also instead of buying the prewired connector can I wire the #1 wire to a volts gauge?

Re: Alternator Wiring

Just buy a resistor from Radio Shack and wire it into 12 volts when the car is started. I ran one wire alts for years until one broke at the track and none was available. Now I can go in and buy one for 1990's GM truck if it ever goes bad, since I wired it in the stock way.

Re: Alternator Wiring

no it wont work if you just wire it to a gauge, has to see 12v though a resistor. if your car doesnt have a volts gauge you will have to add a external aftermarket one though

ok would you have any idea where a 12 volt source would be? and do I have to run this #1 wire to keep my battery from draining?
