Something fried - Loss of Accessories

The wires running to one of my manual cooling fans was routed under the battery and 2 of them were frayed, causing the AC/Heater fuse to blow. I replaced the fuse with a higher rated one and then something fried - and that fuse melted a bit but never burnt out...But the digital dash went out, so did the information center, the heat/AC has no power to it, nor do the power door locks, power windows, or power mirrors.

Other than that the car runs great! But it's a sweat box, and un-drivable without any functioning gauges.

Any ideas what could have fried? Is there a relay or something that could control all these accessories?

Fusin’ For A Bruisin’

The most likely cause is:

You blew a fusible link when you installed a too large fuse.

Fusible Links usually look like a one inch plastic rod in line with the wire and are located near the battery or at the starter.

This is one of two fusible links by the battery. This one is clearly fried - the plastic tube completely melted. I thought for sure this must be my problem so I cut off the links and temporarily spliced the two wires together - still nothing. Shouldn't it work spliced together like this? Or does it need the link to properly work? Or is it another link by the starter as you said?

I don’t see a connection from the pic however
you can use a voltmeter or bulb to find out if the jump is successful.

Update on this...Replaced the blown fusible link and everything still dark...BUT...When I turn the key all the way, past ON, right before the ignition, all the lights come on - the full dash and gauges, and the power windows and locks work, fans, AC/heater...all I have to hold it in this position for everything to stay on. Ideas?

Yes, it sounds like you need to replace the ignition switch.

Thanks NINA. You feel an electrical short in that fan wire could cause the ignition to go bad?

ALSO, since I have the panels removed to get to the fuse panel - there is a rubber hose attached to a wiring harness...not connected to anything...WTF is that doing under the dash?

It can.

When you put the overrated fuse in the undue current might have burned a portion on the ignition switch contacts.

Sounds like something the PO did.

Make sure it’s not being used as a strain relief, then it’s safe to remove.

Ignition SWITCH (not cylinder) was replaced and power restored. Thanks NINA!
