Starter issues

I have hooker shorty headers on my TPI, and when i run the car for too long and shut it down, it wont start until it either cools down for a half hour + or i get some water and hose down the starter to cool it off. I was wondering if anyone else had this similar problem and what they did to remedy it. the starter came with a really cheap heat shield, but it wouldnt fit under the headers.

Re: Starter issues

Starter heat soak is a rather common problem especially with some "aftermarket" starters and headers. About the only sure fix is to buy one of the high torque mini-starters. Your starting problems will be gone.

Re: Starter issues

I'm having a very similar problem. When I drive the car 20 minutes or more it won't crank. A mechanic shorted the starter with a big screw driver to make it crank. I had the alternator tested and it was ok. What are your symptons?

Re: Starter issues

if he shorted the starter then that means the solenoid is your issue. i dont get anything out of my starter, which may mean its the solenoid too. I would like to see this starter cover to see if that'll help.

Car is in the paint shop right now. The reason, I thought it was similar to your problem was it started right up after sitting a couple of days.

Re: Starter issues

Swap to an LT1 starter (factory mini-starter, baby!) The old direct-drive starter puts the solenoid too close to the exhaust.

Take a moment to consider your tune. Mix too rich or timing too retarded will both cause excess exhaust heat and make this problem worse.

You also might consider a relay trigger for the solenoid. GM did a poor job of wiring the ignitions switch in these cars, especially the ones with VATS. Damn solenoid trigger is a mile long!

Re: Starter issues

Wrap your headders and get a heat shield. Also, a remote solenoid would help. Seen a few threads about it.

Hey man did you ever end up putting in that high torque mini-starters?? If you did how did it work out for you? I am thinking about putting one in cause I'm having the same hot no start problem. But wanted to see how it worked out for you before I spend the money on it.
