Hello every one im new to the forums, "this is my first post" but I have found Alot of useful information here in the past.

My question has to do with hooking up a remote starter unit to my 86 Z28 305 tpi. I installed the unit and got the alarm portion to work, my Power locks didn't work wen I bought the car I replaced the lock switches and actuators... That's another topic tho. So my problem is im trying to figure out which yellow wire near the steering column is the sure for the starter relay . There's a yellow wire on the right side of the column that I tried to use but I can't start the car remotely with that one. Or is it the yellow wire on the left side of the column that's harder to get to and on a smaller harness the one that I need to use. The unit that I have if the Audiovox Aps997c remote car starter. If any one has any info or helpful tips it will be deeply appreciated

Which yellow wire is the starter relay wire, right or left side of colum

 

The factory yellow wire from the Ign switch is no use to you because it is only hot when the key is in the START position.
You would need a permanent 12V supply to your new relay in order for it to work

Thank you Vettoz I'll give it a try this weekend skyhook I do have a red wire that came with the unit wired to the red wire from the ignition harness.

 

Dose anyone else have any experance with remote starter set up

 

Check your local Craigslist, under Services / Auto and look for alarm installers...
I've met a couple good and fair priced ones, and a few over priced ones.... Had great results with the first 2...

you have to wire the start output of the starter to the yellow that goes to the shifter area

You splice the yellow starter wire from your unit into the stock starter wiring somewhere before the P/N switch

What?

Obviously you've never installed a remote starter, the starter wire is one of the many connections needed for the remote starter to function.

In cases like this where you have to ask which wire to use, I strongly suggest you find someone with experience and pay them to install this for you. This is especially true if your car happens to be a manual, which requires more connections and can be quite a bit more dangerous in the end if not installed correctly.

 

If you read my post above I withdrew that comment after the OP clarified what he was actually after.

Your comment should be direct to the OP , I am not the one doing the install ( and I know how to wire cars )

There was no clarification needed, anyone with remote start install experience would have known this. My comment is still applicable.

Which is yet another reason I strongly suggest you find someone with experience to do this for you. Starting with a remote starter as a first electrical project in a vehicle is not recommended, due to the systems and safety concerns involved.

 

Well it would be nice if any one with experience can step and school us on what it take to install the remote starter.Just like the OP i am also looking into doing the same thing.

 

Well here's the dilema experienced people (and myself) are in:

1. Know what you're doing or pay someone to do it, if you cant figure it out you should have a professional do it, I did this for a living and I don't suggest anyone with a set of AutoZone crimpers and butt connectors to dive into a remote start.

2 if you do it wrong you can fry the unit, or worse your wiring, there's also a risk involved with an unsafe install (minimal but possible to hook the neutral safety up wrong)

3. my experience is with DEI models, straight forward for me and simple, audiovox has always had some holes in their instructions, to be honest they're usually harder to install, seriously man pay someone to do this for you.

You need to be able to identify the proper wires and components and follow the instructions, this is the bread and butter of installers, its a detail oriented trade, hooking up a radio, subs, sure that's easy. Remote starts have a large amount of connections required, if you can't get it you can't get it. That's all it comes down to, personally I don't feel comfortable getting involved in someone else's install, its a bees nest of problems when something goes wrong.

 

The yellow starter wire will be the thicker yellow wire...just like the other main wires such as 12v constant/ignition/accessory. I do this for a living as well and honestly I could sit here and preach you should pay someone else to do it..but then how are you going to learn.I will do the opposite..if this is something of interest to you to do..practice on your own car first. A car that is very basic..non computer controlled like the camaro or a old honda civic is perfect.Get yourself a cheap multimeter or probe test light.Always test your wires to verify they are what you need them to be,never hook a wire up that you are not 100% sure of its function.Doing so will be a fast expensive way to learn your lesson!. If you came on here and posted that your new to doing this kind of installation..tested your wires and still had an issue with the car not starting,I doubt anyone would fault your efforts.Take your time to do this type of work properly using the right tools/methods and your answer for this would be easily found Good luck and go buy a multimeter and try finding the starter wire the right way.

 

Thank you for your advise. That's why I've been coming to the forums is to learn from others that have more knowledge in the automotive field. I understand the safety concerns.

 

I think the airbag wire is also yellow. Be careful with that too.

 

no airbag in an 86 maro from what I recall
