89 camaro no cranking
Hi everyone.
Here's the issue:
Car will not crank with the key. It starts and runs just fine with the key in "run" when hot wired. I've been running it this way a little over a week, as work time is not allowing me much time to look at/work on it right now.
Things I've checked:
12v at yellow wire off the ignition switch
0 v on purple wire at NSS and starter while cranking
12 v on the 2nd yel wire at starter relay while cranking
0v on first yel wire at starter relay...at any time
No security light coming on when key turned to run, but was working fine until this issue started.
I've tried to "bypass the relay" by jumping both the yellow wires (individually) to the green/white, but nothing happened ( first yellow wire has 0v ).
The car has a clifford alarm with remote start that I installed 10 years ago. I figured the alarm might have crapped out, so I bypassed the alarm, pulled the vats resistor from the key harness, so its back to the "original harness". I tested the power to and from the alarm, and everything is as it should be.
Any ideas as to what I have overlooked or still need to do? I've searched the forums here, and that is how I have been able to test what I have, but still lost it seems.
My ? is, does the 1st yel wire on the relay come from the ign switch, or is it the inner one?
All help is greatly appreciated !! I want to get back to this
without having to jump the starter whenever I need to go somewhere.

Nobody has any ideas as to what the problem might be, or what else I need to check?
Thanks in advance !!

What happens if you put 12V on the green wire out of the relay ?

I'm guessing if we have to look at wiring diagrams, they would be for the 95 Firebird 3.4L V6 right?

Observe whether the security light flashes or is steady when you turn on the ignition (without trying to crank it). ALLData says the security light normally illuminates about 5 seconds then goes out.

[QUOTE=vetteoz;5713400]If you have VATS should have power on both yellows when in crank
What happens if you put 12V on the green wire out of the relay ?
Thankyou for responding !
I now have 12v on each yellow line. I must not have had a good connection with my leads.
Un jumpered, there is 0v on the green/wht, and no cranking. When I jumper from either yellow to green/white, there is no cranking. Voltage tested at relay and NNS. This should indicate a bad relay im thinking , but why no cranking with relay bypassed?
There is 12 volt coming from the small green wire on the relay while "cranking",which should be from the vats system, correct?, and operating correctly.

Re: 89 camaro no cranking
No, the required wiring diagram is from the '89. Only the engine was changed, not the entire electrical system.
As for the security light, again, it does not come on AT ALL since this no cranking problem arose.

Re: 89 camaro no cranking
I suppose you can check the fuses including the VATS, ECM IGN, GAGE, verify battery voltage be at least 12.4-12.8 volts.
You may be able to get away with 11.0 volts I can't exactly remember the bare minimum.
Make sure battery connections are clean and tight all the way to the starter.
A preliminary diagnosis can be to turn the headlights on and operate the starter motor;
*If the lights go out, then there is a poor connection between the battery and starter motor.
*If the lights dim then the battery may be run down and need to be charged or replaced.
*If the lights stay bright and still no cranking then there is an open circuit either in the starter itself, the starter switch, or the control circuit.

Re: 89 camaro no cranking
So it seems that power goes from the battery --> ignition switch --> Starter Enable Relay --> PASS Key Decoder Module + Transmission Gear Selector Switch (two yellow wires, one for each) --> Starter Solenoid (Purple wire from Gear Selector connects these two) --> Ground (internally through the hold-in windings from inside the solenoid).
*Battery positive connects to the starter solenoid.
*The Starter Enable Relay is located behind the Left Hand side of the Instrument Panel, left of steering column.

Re: 89 camaro no cranking
you need to have power to your NSS and if the NSS is good it passes it to the starter. This really helped me http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38
