The trigger wire being bad can cause that.

Re: I have burned up 3 alternator in three week help

It's probably a battery problem. If the battery is drawing too much current from the alternator, it will burn the alternator up. You could use an amp clamp and check the current draw or, if you have a vehicle you don't have to use for a bit you could borrow it's battery.
I wouldn't just swap it with another vehicle though. You don't want to burn up an alternator on a different vehicle.

Whats a trigger wire?
Make sure the alternator is grounded to the block. Clean all those bolted connections. You may want to run a heavy wire from the alternator to the block. Lifting a ground will blow the generator very quickly. It is probably the diodes that you are frying

Sorry to go "old school" with "Trigger" wire, is also known as the 12v ign source wire or the sensing wire (been a long week)..

Re: I have burned up 3 alternator in three week help

I'm guessing he means the sensor wire? I suppose I can see what hes getting at. The alternator does not use permanent magnets to generate power they use an electromagnet. The alternator regulates the output voltage but increasing or decreasing the magnetic field in the alternator. If you were to lose or have a bad connection at your sensing wire the alternator might think there's low battery voltage and increase the field strength (and the output) to try to bring that voltage up. If it was bad enough, it could potentially destroy itself in the process. I guess the easiest thing to check would be to measure the output of the alternator itself. If its charging the battery at 16-20V thats probably not too good.

Have you replaced any pullys on your vehicle?

Re: I have burned up 3 alternator in three week help

No I have not replaced any pulleys. I got it from an 18 year old kid that him n his dad put a cam in it and could get it running correct. I replaced spark plugs wire cap rotor starter alternator. Then set the timing to 12° advance at idle n it's about 27° at 2500 rpms all runs good n strong now! He also painted the car n didn't remember to scratch the grounds back down to metal! Lol
