Open/close car/trunk with remote control

Hi all

About opening/closing the car/trunk with remote control.
As far as I know, you normally open/close thirdgen cars with keys. But actually the lock motors are present as they are triggered by a switch you find in the door panels (in T/A at least).

I'm trying to use a simple antitheft kit, which provides a remote control, and connect it to those motors wires, and to the truck button wires. The idea is to being able to open/close the car with the remote control.

Is it feasible for you?
Have anybody tried this already?

thanks

Re: Open/close car/trunk with remote control

Not sure about TA, My 92 Camaro works fine on an aftermarket (Viper) car alarm.

My pulldown is broken though so needs assistance, Trying to figure out a way to make it work without pulldown.
The Unlock/open is mechanical and not off a switch, once it reaches at the top of the pulldown it slides a small rod over unlatching the trunk.
I got a few RC car servos im going to try and wire in to a relay and eliminate the pulldown all together.

What is the pulldown?

Does anybody know if my idea will work?

You can use a simple lock/unlock remote to lock or unlock the doors or to pop the trunk if it has a trunk feature. The only way to have the doors open with a remote is to add solenoids which usually means shaved door handles. The shaved door handle kits are usually around $200 and contain the remotes, solenoids and hardware/wiring.

It has both doors actuators and trunk actuator.

Why should I have to add solenoids if the car already has doors actuators? Don't understand this

"Shaving doors" it seems to be is far beyohnd what I would like to do. Am I wrong?

THANKS!

Re: Open/close car/trunk with remote control

Maybe a bit of language barrier here ?

Nick , you say you want to "open/close car/trunk with remote control" ....

Are you talking in the sense of "open" meaning to "unlock" , or do do actually mean that you push a button and the door swings open ? Yes , you already do have actuators for locking/unlocking the doors and opening the trunk , so a proper aftermarket alarm/remote start system with the optional accessory function relays are all you'll need to pop your trunk open and lock or unlock your doors . But to actually push the doors open by remote control would require different actuators and the bunch of expen$ive work to go along with their proper setup in the car .

It's funny , the trunk on a different car I drive can be both opened AND closed from a button , I especially like the opening function for loading stuff in , but the automatic closing function seems to be more for impression than practicality's sake . Hell , I'm standing right there , just got through loading/unloading the trunk , how hard is it to push the lid down shut ?

Re: Open/close car/trunk with remote control

hahaha actually YES OrangeBird I didn't thought about that. Here "to open" means both "to unlock" and physically open the door (at an angle).

Well, I meant "to unlock" the doors. The first time I noticed the T/A has doors actuators, I thought that it is meant to be opened and closed with remote control. Keys are so old styled

Do you think everything can be done, and that the stock actuators can handle hundred of open/close operations?

What do you mean with "optional accessory function relays" ?

THANKS!!

I don't know about over there, but over here we have shops everywhere that install exactly what you want. In fact, I just picked up a system for my daily driver. The Remote locks, unlocks, Alarms, disarms, and starts the car. I paid around $300 for the kit and they installed it.

Something like this:

But to answer your question in the simplest form, YES, it can be done.

Re: Open/close car/trunk with remote control

OOps , sorry Nick , I had not noticed you asked about the relays ...

Like Padak showed , remote start/alarm units come in kit form and can be installed by an electrically savvy mechanically minded person . Most of these kits come with only that which is required to remote start the engine and sound the alarm if any voltage drop is sensed (the light coming on when a door is opened for ex.) or if the car is jarred or bumped . Often times , other functions such as door locks will require a separate purchase of a relay specifically wired to take the system's unlock signal and mimic the action of the door unlock/lock switch . A careful read of the specifications of any unit you are considering buying will tell exactly what functions are provided for in the kit VS what you may need to purchase separately as an "add on accessory" to the main kit .

Also , please be VERY careful choosing who will do the work . To us who know automotive electronics , installing a remote start is a very easy job , fun in a way because we get to personalize the installation in our own way . But to the guy whose good with mechanical things but not strong on electrical , this can be akin to brain surgery and all kinds of electrical mayhem can result from an inexperienced improper installation .

So choose both your system and your installer wisely , and you'll be fine ...

Re: Open/close car/trunk with remote control

Thank you guys, that was the answer I was looking for: yes, it's an easy and common aftermarket procedure

Yeah Padak, the link you put is exactly what I'm looking for!

OrangeBird, the guy whom I asked to do the work is pretty expert about electronics. He build hi-profile audio setup inside cars and often he modifies the interiors to accomodate the parts. A reliable guy.

My idea was this: just to take the wires connected to the door panels switches, and attach them the control unit. I dont really care to have fancy stuff like parking lights to blink, I just want the car to unlock by means of a remote.

I'll let you know.

thanks!!
