replacing ignition switch?
I bought a 89 firebird rolling chassis and was wondering if I need a certain switch since I'm assuming 89 had vats. I'm replacing all the locks since I don't have any keys.

It depends on the engine computer you get and more importantly the wiring harness.

Re: replacing ignition switch?
You only needs vats if you retain the starter enable circuit or the fuel enable circuit. Since your going with carb and not FI and the starter enable can be bypassed you do not need the VATS ignition switch

Re: replacing ignition switch?
VATS isn't in the ignition switch.
It's not in the lock cylinder, either, but, the cyl is at least in the chain of things.
From your description, you're working on the latter.
All that's there, is a set of contacts to connect to the VATS resistor in the key. That's all. None of the "intelligence" (if I may be so bold as to apply such a word, in 2014, to VATS) lives in the lock cylinder.
You don't have to worry about it. Just get the right lock cyl for your car, install it right, and move on.
