Horn Problems

I am having trouble finding the horn relay location on my 89 camaro rs. The horn hasn't worked since i bought the car in may. the person I had bought from also has electrical tape holding the center cover on the steering wheel. any thoughts? I use the car as a daily driver right now because i have no other car to drive, but i am planning to restore it on a later date.

Re: Horn Problems

The relay is located behind the instrument panel to the right of the steering column with the turn signal flasher and such.

Re: Horn Problems

the electrical tape covering the horn button likely required removal of the horn relay...to keep the horn from blowing all the time, like. might be why you can't find it.

Look in the trunk or center console.

Not if it's been removed...

I've got one in a box in my garage. I know because it has a piece of tape around it that says "horn relay".

How do you know his convenience center has been disturbed. Why would it be in his console or trunk, R U the PO of his car ?

Certainly don't know, but if electrical tape is holding the horn button on, there is a high probability that it was making constant contact and could have been removed to stop the horn from blowing...

so there is a greater than zero chance that it is no longer located in the convenience center.

Re: Horn Problems

I would suggest getting a Haynes manual.my horns didn't work because of a broken plastic part that rode on the contact ring on the steering wheel .I had to fabricate a part to make it work. That is likely the case for you as well, which is why the tape was there.

Don't feel bad, I often don't know myself but...

The horn button, or switch, is under the center cover of the steering wheel.

The horn relay is energized by the horn button, which sends power to the horns behind the left front fender.

Since the OP's horn button is held in place with electrical tape, it is possible that the PO removed the horn relay to keep the horn from blowing continuously or intermittently. If the relay has been removed it won't be found in the convenience center, but 'may' still be in the vehicle somewhere.

An example of at least one instance where the relay would not be located in the convenience center, which invalidates a proposed universal truth.
