Speedo stuck?

For the past few months, my speedo has refused to move right after starting out. In the beginning, I'd have to drive 1/4 mile or so and it would "pop" up to 15-20 then run normally. Lately, it takes more distance and higher speeds to get it to move - now up to about 5 miles and won't come on until I hit at least 40 or so.

It's a 92, so it has the electronic guages. Is this an electronic problem or are the mechanical parts to blame?

Any suggestions on how to check this out and what to try first?

Thanks

Sounds like it is the gauge. If it was the wiring it should work more randomly and not only at certain speeds. You can buy a new speedometer gauge off ebay for pretty cheep.

Thanks, 89 IROC Z. Any idea if it's repairable? Since you think it's mechanical as opposed to wiring, I'm wondering if a good old fashioned cleaning of the mechanism might help.

I'm a bit leary of a used one, from eBay or the scrap yard plus, being a 92 it has the yellow markings rather than the much more common white. Took me forever to find a yellow cig lighter to fill that hole in my dash.

Thanks again

It’s been a while since I have taken apart a 90-92 dash. I think you are going to have to replace the gauge. Try making sure all electoral contacts are tight on the gauge and the dash but it sounds like the gauge just needs to be replaced.

I'm having that same problem. Only on my 91 RS, it's not moving for oh I'd say about 20 mins. My engine light lights up too, until the speedo kicks in. Any comments?

Check out my thread further down the board for a little info:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=267553

Did your SES light (check engine light) come on at all, especially a code 24? Most of the time the problem is just your VSS (vehicle speed sensor), but not always. Do you have access to a scan tool or laptop and ALDL cable? I'm asking because with those you can see if the computer is seeing vehicle speed or not, which will narrow down the problem. If Trickster doesn't post here than just ask him for some info on a code 24 for a 91 Z. Sorry I'm not of more help.

When you say "check the cable", do you mean the speedometer cable? Just asking because the '90 and later 3rd gens don't have speedometer cables, they're electronic.

By the way, your 91 Z looks awesome (just saw your CarDomain site)!

I meant the speed sensor wiring on the trans. I read in the other post that it can come loose? Thanks for the compliment on the car too.

Oh OK, I understand what your saying now, and yes, the wire can sometimes get loose or come off.
