Fuses at the battery?

I have a 1989 Formula 350 convertible I just purchased, the fuel pump has no power. Turn the key nothing. So was reading about how to trouble shoot the problem, the fist thing I check are the fuses by the battery. I had to remove the battery because its tight. It has two what I think are inline fuse connectors pike wire in/out, and looks like a black wire in/red out. when I opened them there was no fuse? I had 20amp buse fuse, but they didn't fit. Not sure if theses are fuses or something else.

Also the engine does run on starting fluid.

Re: Fuses at the battery?

You need fuses there! They both take 20 amp fuses
Try popping some in and see where that gets you.

Re: Fuses at the battery?

They should just be regular 20amp fuses, same size you'd use in the fuse box under the dash. That's exactly how it is on my Sport Coupe, they slide into the 2 metal prongs in the connector. Maybe they're bent in too close and you're having difficulty inserting a fuse?

It's not glass inline fuse? The housing is cylinder shaped? I must be missing something.

Re: Fuses at the battery?

The fuses you're looking for should be square, with a black plastic weather-protection cap. They're bolted right in front of the battery (facing the car, they're under that lip between the battery and the coolant recovery tank.) under the fender, the fuel pump one has a orange and red wire leading into it. I think what you've found is a unrelated fusible link?

Re: Fuses at the battery?

They should look like this (not my picture but you should get the idea)-

You take the black cap off and your 20amp fuse goes into the metal prongs. Good luck!

Re: Fuses at the battery?

the black wire with cylindrically shaped plastic piece and red wire coming out is a fusible link,. the black wire is the actual fuse wire and the cylindrical thing the factory connection which you should not try to take apart
