You may want to check your hatch struts. They may be week. The hatch with new ones will lift the hatch up upon release.

Yep...that's how mine behaves (well, behaved before the motor broke), as my struts are strong enough to hold the hatch open, but not to lift it. I therefore always release the hatch with the key, never at the button on the dash.
Re: Trans am auto trunk
If the hatch struts are starting to get weak, you will have to lift the hatch up off the motor as soon as you hear the latch click open. Otherwise, the motor just pushes the latch up and into the striker which tells the motor the trunk has been closed and to reverse.
Have someone lift on the hatch while you press the button. If they lift it open and the motor doesn't reverse, replace the hatch struts.

Thanks. I’m really need to fix this detail as the lady that owns it is getting it ready to sell. This is a fuel injected 87 trans am with 5900 miles. I’m just happy she let me take to work on. Thanks again.

If the backlight/hatch glass has a defroster, you have to use struts that have plastic insulators where it bolts to the car. Otherwise you will pop the defroster controller.
The defroster power goes from the body harness to the defroster grid via the hatch struts. No insulators and it shorts to ground. Pop.
