melting fuse

i have a 87 T/A with an l98 engine.

i replaced the fusible link at the battery with a inline fuse holder. now the fuse wire is getting hot and melting the fuse. this all stated when i bought the car and i thought it was because the other owner hot wired the fans to come on when you turn on the car. they hacked up the wiring for it so i went and bought a new harness. but im still having the same problem any help would be great.

What kind of inline fuse did you use? It needs to be a high amperage fusible linke, not just an inline fuse holder with a regular fuse.

You can get one from Discount Auto. My Suburban kept burning the one from my alternator to the battery so I used a piece of 14 gauge wire to connect it with no further problems. The lower gauge wire will do the same thing. It will burn thru before you have major damage. It's is a workaround and you need to be aware that any electrical problem or indication thereafter requires immediate shutdown and inspection. Not a good idea if others are going to be driving your car.
