Z28 is it Governed?

I know it’s not 3rd gen related but my question is a 95 Z28 with a 6 speed manual all stock is it truly governed it has 150 mph speedo I never got a chance to actually test its limits but some of you may have just curious how can I remove this and should I change out my Driveshaft for safety I plan to track the car on time attack laps and things of that nature or can I just do any speed I want with no tune or anything like that thanks in advance

Re: Z28 is it Governed?

Can I just go to any performance related shop and tell them to remove the governor and they will know what to do I’ll pay the cost I don’t care about that I don’t think it will be all that expensive anyway

Re: Z28 is it Governed?

Check the speed rating of the factory tires. On 3rd gens that came factory equipped with Z rated tires, they had no speed limiter. Otherwise they were governed to a lower speed then the speed rating of the factory tires (usually in the 110 - 112 MPH range). Note that this is true of most of the EFI cars. The carbed 3rd gens weren't limited in speed.

Re: Z28 is it Governed?

My 95Z has a rev limiter and I just can't remember what the stock rev limit was set @ !!! You can adjust it with a Hypertech Power Programmer or some similar "programmer". Mine reached about 142 when it had 3.42's; I ran out of road and just never took it that high again. ( Might be willing to sell the Hypertech,................ I've already returned my Z to the STOCK config so the HPP is ready to use. )

AFAIK: The 95 Z had to have the best tires available from the factory in order to get the 150 speedo gauge.

Re: Z28 is it Governed?

Yes the limit was determined by what speed rating was on the original factory tire. I believe there were two choices the all season tire got you 110 I believe and the Z rated were 155 or 162. I had a 99 WS6 when they were new and I believe that car was set at 162 but speedometer stopped at 155. And believe me it would do it. Looking back now that I’m 20 years older can’t figure why I even did it. Lol. And to boot, 162 was in 6th gear with a cutoff at 3000 rpm. Curious what it would do at 6500 in sixth gear

You'd have never got there with the stock LS1. You would have reached a terminal speed where wind resistance would have kept you from going faster. Need more HP!

My 97 would run 150 but I never had an area to try to run any faster..

If you weren't I'd able to I'd be surprised. Stock LS f-bodies with no limiter should be able to reach past 165. I think I've seen 168mph quoted somewhere. The LS1 in birds was under-rated, internally it was the same as the 350hp LS1 in the vette. Only difference was intake and exhaust really.

I've never seen a true measured top speed from a stock L98 with no limiter, but my best guess is about 153-156mph. While they are only 30hp behind a LT1 the power band of a L98 falls off sharply compared to the LT1's power band. So that would contribute to the LT1 which is past 160mph.

The only Thirdgen I know of to have its top speed officially clocked is the TTA at 162mph, and that 162 was limited not by aerodynamic drag, but by the engine's rev limiter.

I took the GTA to what was based on engine speed and gear about 177 and it was NOT done. I ran out of RPM in 4th gear and went into 5th. The needle was still going when I watched it cross the 6000rpm mark. At 6000rpm in 5th gear with a M29 T56, 3.23 gears, and a 275/40 tire is 177.3mph. I just decided my ***** were not big enough to stay in it. With the power the car makes on the top end I would not be surprised if the top speed was around 190. When I built the car I did a whole bunch of math because I wanted enough power to break the 200mph barrier.

80-120mph is REALLY fun because thats a 3rd gear blast to redline that happens so fast.
