not your usual dome light help needed

alright guys so when i got my car the previous owner hacked up the wiring pretty good, then with me swapping the car and not needing anything but the body side wiring i installed a universal 12 circuit harness setup. guy had cut the wiring off the pin switches for the dome light. ive been trying to figure out a new way to wire these up on a 3 way latching switch. im not too great with electrical and this setup has been confusing the heck out of me.

so i want to be able to mount up a on/off/on toggle switch on the dash. itll switch between doors/off/on if you get what i mean.

heres a crude drawing i made up if someone might be able to draw out how i can wire this up. remember the door switches ground out when the door is open.

thanx in advance

You could also just ground the neg (blk) wire on the switch straight to your chassis instead of the batt, right?

dang well thanx ill have to try it and see if it works.

also i should probably add a fuse right? if so, what size?

sat on google for the past couple days and there was sooooo many different ways people went about wiring them up with relays and resistors and stuff.

Re: not your usual dome light help needed

If youre tying into the OE door switch/dome light wiring just use the fuse in the fusebox, but i wouldn't go higher than 10amps. Maybe 5 for an LED alone. I would skip the relay since there is no high current draw from one little bulb/LED. You might need a resistor however for a stand alone LED so you don't fry it with the 12v circuit, but if its a plug in LED, probably already has its own resistor/s.

Re: not your usual dome light help needed

at the moment i dont have anything up there. just headliner.

the plan was to mount some on the overhead that i bought. but its missing alot of parts and kinda like the clean look of just having the headliner there.

was thinking on placing them on the very top of the windshield since theyre mounted with double sided tape. maybe high enough where you cant see them but theyll light up the interior nicely.

yeah of course. im thinking if i put the high enough up on the windshield theyll be blocked by the headliner and visors from direct view. guess i just gotta wire some up and move them around the car and see where theyll work the best.

Made a simple mount to mount 2 of these leds. One for each side. Love the look. Might see if i can make the bracket a little different later but for now it works.

Re: not your usual dome light help needed

Swapper, try mounting those led bars under the armrests.
Someone else recently did that and it seems to work pretty well.

Re: not your usual dome light help needed

hmm yeah i was thinking of other places to mount them. was thinking like under the dash or seats facing forward. didnt think of under the arm rests. once the car gets a roll bar ill probably be putting one up on it for the back area even though im most likely getting rid of the rear seats.
