1992 V6 stalls due to no spark
1992 V6 stalls due to no spark
Hi guys I have a 1992 Firebird 3.1 v6 automatic which has a bit of a problem. When I'm driving it sometimes stalls because it doesnt get any spark.
First the speedometer will stop working and drop to 0, then after about 30 seconds or longer the speedometer will work again and at the exact same time my engine shuts off. Turning over the key to start it again doesn't work, it will turn over but it won't get going again. But if I instead turn the ignition off and then start it again it will fire right up and I can keep on moving without having to stop.
I replaced the ignition module but that didn't help. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? It's my only car at the moment and having to deal with this every single day has been torture for me.

So the check engine light is on ? Got a paperclip ?

There's no check engine light on from what I remember, I think I would have noticed that but I'll check tomorrow, it's 1 am here right now. But please tell me what to do with the paperclip

Try another ECM, it is a '7730. Should have an AZTY MEMCAL in it, if not can swap over the one from your current ECM.

Rbob, could the ecm shut off if injectors are shorting or would that just shut down there driver not ecm ?
if you need a ecm , I think that’s the culprit the speedometer signal runs though it is why your seeing it glitch.

Re: 1992 V6 stalls due to no spark
Ive had some trouble logging in but Im back. I tried the paperclip trick but no check engine light appeared anywhere. Changing the ecm is a good idea, does a manual 3.1 v6 firebird have the same one as my automatic 3.1 v6? If thats so I know where to get another one. Thanks for the help guys.

I wonder what was wrong with your old PCM? That's great the new one fixed the issue.
