Swapped my 84 Camaro to an HEI distributor can't seem to get the tach to work! All the forums say the tach signal wire is white but wiring diagram says black???

Not sure what diagram your using, but, the tach signal is most certainly a white wire, the black wire is the tach's ground connection and the pink/black is +12V...........

(listed as "WHT To Engine Control")

Re: Tach signal

The only white wire I can find comes out of the resistor in the first picture and it is brown on the other side of the resistor! I tried hooking to that white wire and it didn't work

Re: Tach signal

Interesting, I've never seen a diagram listing the tach signal wire as black, I've always seen it listed as being white (like in the diagram I enclosed in my other post). Where did your diagram come from?

Also, in your pic with the connector having the white and black (with a green wire in view) you can see on the distributor a connection labeled "Tach", what color wire is plugged into it?

The brown wire that comes from that resistor on the other side of the resistor the wire is white and it goes into the main harnessNothing is plugged into it now as it didn't work

Re: Tach signal

I'm curious if the white wire that's plugged into the black connector is supposed to be there, or should it be plugged into the distributor's "tach" terminal?

What is the color of the wire presently plugged into the "tach" terminal?

Re: Tach signal

There isn't anything plugged into currently

Everywhere I've looked says white wire is tach signal so I'm sure that's it just not sure what that resistor or diode is for

Re: Tach signal

I have read here in the past of a "Tach Filter" used on the earlier cars (my 89 doesn't have it) so it could be that? I'm sorry I have no experience with pre 1989 cars.

And if there is nothing plugged into the "tach" port on the distributor that should be looked into. Could the white wire that's plugged into the black wire connector be supposed to be plugged into the "tach" port instead?

Re: Tach signal

Ok so I think your misunderstood I had the white/brown wire hooked to the tach signal wire on the distributor but since it didn't work I unhooked it

I figured before I bypassed the resistor and just hooked the white wire directly to the tach signal wire on the distributor I'd post on a forum

Re: Tach signal

Gotcha on the white/brown.

I think I would try hooking the white to the tach signal terminal. A quick look at my car has it that way. I know my car is much later than yours, but perhaps someone over the years wired your's using the later model method?

Re: Tach signal

Googled tach filter and I would say that's what it is I'll bypass and go straight to the white wire thanks!
