ignition cylinder behind key?

hi, new to 3rd gens. cruising home yesterday mine died on the highway, doing 65 ish, temps were cool maybe 180/190 ?
rolled to a stop. when i lost power (auto, i was in OverDrive) i looked in the rear view before merging over rand noticed some bright orange HOT stuff getting shot out of the exhaust. fingers crossed that was something from the cat....

well my ignition has always been hard to turn, you have to turn it like as far as it would go and then some to get it to turn over and fire up, and sometimes it doesnt work, gotta play with it a bit. well now, it wont turn over at all. so im HOPING that's my issue and my engine isnt done. it's an '85 iroc with a old 350 swapped into it with the tune port stuff. i just set timing earlier in the day to 15*, she got a new distributor a few weeks ago and new plugs /wires just the other day. been running GREAT.
so im looking for the ignition cylinder that goes Behind the key lock ignition cylinder but i cant seem to find one. is the part number US295T ?

got home, got my trailer, got back home and went to sleep. gonna check the oil today, turn the engine over by hand (hopefully it does) and if so assume it's ignition related so then jump into that. she doesnt want to even try to turn over with the key now, i dont get a starter click or anything
it stayed in OD when i lost power and slowed down, i could heard the engine still turning over while slowing and temps were plenty cool. i dont think it's locked up or anything catastrophic but who knows

Re: ignition cylinder behind key?

The Gear Selector must be in Park or Neutral for the Circuit that triggers the Starter-Motor to Operate as designed.

Then Report back so we can try and decipher if the Lock-Cylinder or the ACTUAL "Ignition-Switch" is giving you issue.

Re: ignition cylinder behind key?

yeah trust me, when i came to a stop i put it into Park and tried to fire back up. no crank / turn over, nothing.

fast forward to yesterday afternoon. i get home from work, she fires right up -_____-
people on facebook (3rd gen group) are saying coil and ICM .... i know those are common to get hot and fail, but they're both brand new with the distributor. less than 300 miles on them if that. AND it wouldnt even crank, if it would crank but not fire up i would suspect the hei coil and icm, but no crank at all that's a key cylinder issue, no ?

Re: ignition cylinder behind key?

The Lock-Cylinder would be an issue if the key will not go into/ out-of, or turn the Lock-Cylinder.

The Ignition-Switch (or the Wring into/ out-of) could be the issue if the Lock-Cylinder turns, but nothing happens.

Also main Ground/ Power Connections could be an issue, as well as the Starter-Motor/ corresponding Circuits (including Neutral-Safety).
