Key and ignition cylinder got STUCK while the car was ON and it kept trying to start.

So basically, you know when you start your car and it starts, and you accidentally turn the key a little too long while the car is started and it makes that loud grinding noise? Okay well my car did that and the whole ignition/cylinder was stuck in that position and wouldn't move. It made that grinding noise for roughly 5 minutes before I got it to stop. The car was over red lining on the temp gauge, coolant started boiling. And obviously it wasn't the key that was stuck, it was the cylinder that turns. I disconnect the battery and alternator and kill the car. With lots of jiggling and luck I finally get the cylinder to turn back and the key slides right out. Seeing if it was a one time thing, I let the car cool down and start it up and sure enough it gets stuck again. I get it out again and here I am. The key will turn to on, and turn to electric, but as soon as you turn it to start the car it gets stuck EVERY time. Please help...

I ordered a new ignition assembly. But I still have a few questions, I was told there wasn't any correlation between what was happening to the starter (the grinding) and the car over heating. So why was the car over heating like ridiculously bad..

Are you saying it was overheating because the gauge read high?

The gauge was over red lining and the coolant was boiling for a good couple minutes

If it was just the gauge than why was the coolant boiling?
