I've just tried to switch my 1988 TBI Fbody to 1991 TPI. Everything has started up great so far and seems to be pretty responsive... But, my engine light is constantly on. I can't seem to get the codes out of the light when I jump the two terminals at the ADL port (I'm using a SD harness from Painless). Umm, maybe it has to do with my Map sensor?!? :P I'm also getting a lot of black smoke during idle. I've got everything alse on the car to work so far (keep u're fingas crossed!!)
I have to drive down to Florida for Valentines Day (I'm such a sweetiee) ...so, help me out boyzz!!!

I would give Painless a call and see what they can come up with as for not getting the codes out of the ECM.As for the black smoke it sounds like a nice fat rich condition at idle,possibly due to a clogged MAP sensor,which also could be throwin your SES light on.

Anyways, the black smoke = really rich. Since the SES light is on definatly pull the codes and I'll bet whatever the codes shows will be your problem child. Sounds like you didn't plug in a sensor.
When you drive around with car at operating temp and come to a stop, does it still puff out black smoke or does it only start puffing if you've been sitting for a while?
Keep us updated, I'm SURE we can figure this out since you've got an SES light that is telling you what's wrong. Most of the time we have to help people out that aren't getting an SES light. Talk about working blindfolded, no light, no car in front of me, just trying to put together the huge puzzle in your head is enough to make you stay up late just thinking about it.

the acar is only kicking out the black smoke when engaged in drive or reverse... I'm not able to pull any codes when I jump my A+B terminals (no flashing at all. this has really been stumping me. My timings off a little too It misses sometimes when I stomp on it.

She didn't post that bull****, he did. He pretended to be his girlfriend thinking that way he's get more help. Personally I think it was down right dumb and uncalled for. This is exactly how crap starts between people and you don't even want to hear the stories I have from other message boards that did what you did.
BTW, proof in the bag is the same post in the gen tech board where he admited to posting as his GF.
I don't really care but understand that you would have gotten my help either way. Don't do this again for at least the obvious reason: Girls have a stereotype about how they don't know jack about mechanics of cars. What this means is you'll waste our time going into detail about the simpliest tasks like checking timing and looking at spark plugs or pulling codes etc. Don't waste my time unless you shape up and stop pretending you're a girl.
As for the tech reply (unlike the other members, cough cough), if no codes and it's spitting out black smoke only when in gear it sounds like something is really screwed up. When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? You'd be suprised how bad a car will run with a dirty filter. Also if you're timing is off you'll backfire through the intake (sometimes) and have hesitation. You need to play around with the car. Change the base timing around a lot, see if it helps and if it gets better. If not, remember where it was before you started messing with it. Also change your o2 sensor.
I have a good feeling it's the o2 sensor for one reason. The ecm goes into open loop (ignores o2 sensor) when there is low vacuum, below 15kpa I think. Lots of vacuum compared to 80-100kpa, WOT. Now when you put the car in gear, engine load increases. The way the ecm sences the engine load is with the MAP sensor. The MAP sensor tells ecm that there is more load and it goes into closed loop after a preset time depending on when you started the car and if the temp has warmed up.
I'm probably way off base but try replacing the o2 sensor. If it isn't that I would hookup a laptop with winaldl and datalog everything. If you need a premade cable let me know through e-mail. It's like $20 shipped. The software is free and it hooks to the ecm with only 2 wires! It's the best darn scanning diagnostic software for TBI PERIOD and it's free. Do a search for winaldl.

I didn't mean to get you guys mad or anything... it did get your attention though. I posted the exact same issue but gave it a different title I got no responses... My girlfriend did write one message in this forum that I was present for. I wouldn't mind meeting up with other Thirdgen's on our trip - but considering that may not have been the way to go about it - All apologies. I don't mean to insult anyone or get anyone annoyed.
