Long time listener, first time caller.
I know this has come up a lot, and I’ve read a lot of threads but none of them had the answer I’m looking for.
I have an ‘85 Iroc that had the regular 2 speed wipers and looking through the threads here it sounded fairly easy to add delayed wipers so off I went.
As you know the delay covers aren’t cheap but I spent the big bucks to get an NOS part so I “knew” it would be good to go.
I bought the delay switch and stalk from Advance Auto.
After changing everything over, I had no washer and no delay but hi, low and mist worked.
I took it apart and started looking around and noticed the two terminals on the motor that looked like they should contact the contacts on the inside of the cover.
I came here and did more research and it turned out people were talking about contact extenders that are needed to make the delay work, but I never found a picture of what they look like, so I made my own assuming they were supposed to more or less come straight out to the contacts.
I put it all back together and this time I had nothing at all until I turned it to hi and then the wipers only moved up and down about 5 or 6 inches.
What am I missing?
What do the contact extenders look like?
Help!
I recently rebuilt my wiper motor - but it is from an '83 with the internal wash pump. From what I learned the wiper motors are about the same since the 70s'.
Post a picture of what you are looking at and I will post a similar picture of mine when I disassembled (before rebuilding) of where my wires terminated.
What your missing are some wires that the 2 speed wiper system doesn't have or use. You cant just switch the cover and stalk. Theres extra/different wires in the pulse harnesses for the extra features in that set-up. The wiper motors will have some differences too, for the extra features in the delay system
Non pulse/2spd
Pulse/delay
Thanks for the diagrams.
Looking at them I see that the switches are different but I swapped that out, so unless there’s something wrong with the switch, that should be good.
The wiring harness appears to connect to all the same places on the motor assembly, so that should be okay.
The motor wiring appears to be the same with the exception of the control module, which is built into the delay cover.
That requires 2 additional connections which I assume is where the contact extenders from the motor to the control board come in, which I tried.
That said, it looks like I have it put together properly.
Am I missing something?
Could the new switch and/or the control module be bad?
If so, how do I test them to be sure?
Does anyone have a picture of the terminal extenders?
I believe they clip onto the terminals in the motor and touch the contacts on the circuit board.
These are the contact extenders I made to make the connection.
When you re-installed that cover. Did you clock the blue disc correctly? I remember the cutaway part has to be under the pin on the arm. Its been a while though. The wipers should be parked prior.
The contact extenders i remember being straight and pointing towards the center, but again its been a while. I have a pic somewhere.
On my 89 GTA, I had never driven it in the rain to know if the wipers worked or not, that said after the LS swap, I tried them and they didn't. I went through every component, ended up being pinned wrong on the case connector, once re pinned it work. In that time of trouble shooting I learned more than I ever wanted to know about third gen F-body pulse wiper wiring.
The system is pretty simple, all the switch is doing is applying voltage to which ever wires are meant for the desired function. If youre trying to make an 88-92 set up work, It needs to be wired like a factory car to work, or it wont and do weird stuff. So off the new wiper switch in the column, where it connects to under that dash, that portion of the harness where it connects to on the car side needs to be pinned to the exact pins on the the bulk head connector for a delay wiper car, because from the bulk head connector in the engine bay side it needs to be pinned correctly to the wiper motor cover.
Look up a C100 connector diagram, it all has to be pinned to the correct slot on both sides or it wont work because the wiper control module will never see the correct voltage sequence on the different wires. You also need a factory service manual because on the wiper diagnostic it shows which wires should be hot in each function. The system is simple, but you need to make sure the C100 has the correct pins and the correct wires or it wont work.
Neil350, I think you’re on to something.
The new switch I got from Advance Auto has a couple wires that are different colors than the original.
I know the wire color itself doesn’t matter but it leads me to think it may be pinned different.
Or it may not be a true replacement.
I feel like electrical stuff from the big chain parts stores are always suspect.
Maybe I’ll look into finding an NOS switch.
Changing that out again will be a PITA but worth it if it works.
I went through that as well and yes, there are some color changes, but the only way to know for sure is to get the service manual for the year of wiper and probe at the different position, thats the only way you're going to know if the electrical is right.
Does anyone have a picture of the terminal extenders?
I believe they clip onto the terminals in the motor and touch the contacts on the circuit board..
Cool.
I feel like I might be on the right track.
I have an NOS switch on order now (boy this has gotten expensive), so I'll install that when I get it and see what I get.
If that doesn't work I'll get a service manual and make sure it's pinned correctly.
That should work.
The system isn't that complicated.
