Ignition problem

Hello so I’m having some ignition problems. About a month ago I drove the car to work in the morning and then it didn’t want to start in the afternoon. I replaced the 7 pin spark control module cap and rotor and it kind of fixed the issue but then I just suddenly ignition and the car dies. I am not able to start it immediately again only after I have turned the ignition with the key completely off then it will run fine until
it dies. Yesterday I replaced the ignition coil with an ACCEL one that is compatible with a computer controlled HEI distributor and it seemed to run fine, but when I gave it gas it would cut off at high rpm and then just die. This morning I was going to test if it was loosing power to the distributor when the car died by testing power at the distributor but when I went to start it up it just sounds terrible like the timing is off and is misfiring because I can really smell the gas and when I give it was it’s not responding it all. I’m going to replace the park control module again to see if it work but I’m not too sure on what it can be besides the pickup coil or ecm any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ignition problem

Did you use the thermal paste on the ICM?

Re: Ignition problem

The spark control module didn’t come with any thermal paste, I went ahead and ordered a module from DUI and I’ll be making sure to put some thermal paste on it next time, the module I removed didn’t look like it had any paste either

Re: Ignition problem

Wondering, does it matter if OP uses conductive thermal paste or not? Arctic Silver is conductive. Arctic mx-6 or mx-4, for example, is not.

Re: Ignition problem

Sorry, Nvm what I said about arctic silver. I looked it up and the stuff they have now like 5 should not be conductive anymore. It's a bit capacitive, but having it on the base for heat transfer won't be a prob.

Re: Ignition problem

It wouldn't matter if it was conductive or not.

Just make sure to use actual thermal conductive paste and not silicone dielectric grease or bulb grease. Absolutely DO NOT use Liquid Metal.

Re: Ignition problem

Don't overlook what might have caused the ICM failure to begin with. These things can potentially get overstressed as a result of some other component failure.

Bad coil, bad coil wire, bad distributor cap, etc. It might fail the replacement too.

A bad distbutor cap failed one on me a while ago.
