int lights

I have a 91 ta which the prev owner blew the dash lights out. I checked the fuse and it was to large so i think that something else was damaged because of this. When i check the fuse terms there is no power to it with or without the lights on. Has anyone had this problem? What is the next device in line to be fried when this is done any help is greatly app It sure is hard to drive at night when you live in the country

I have the same problem. But did anyone's radio lights work, and then go out when the headlights were turned on?

Is it a aftermarket radio?? If it is you may have a wire crossed check the dimmer wire to make sure its hooked to the right spot

No, It's a stock stereo. I never touched any wires. One night I turned on my lights and the interior was blacked out. Sooner or later,I'm gota get behind the dash and see if I can figure this out. But the remote dimmer switch is my new leading suspect.

Thats what i replaced and everything is functional now. mine was compleatly dead due to a short putting in a radio with to large of a fuse in the fuse cluster. I bought mine from parts america for about 28-30 after shipping. Mine was mounted above the fuse closer to the driver. just remove the lower dash and you will see what i mean.

Thanks for the help. Im gonna get the dash off sometime soon and see what I can do. I posted before and no one mentioned the dimmer switch. I wonder If its shown in any wiring diagrams.

1985+ thirdgen firebirds have a "remote dimmer" setup. The common failure part is not the dimmer switch itself, but rather the dimmer transistor aka "remote dimmer". The part is well hidden in the dash, you only need to remove the drivers underdash panel and convience cluster to access it, you don't need to remove the entire dashboard from the car like one would for a heater core replacement.

1984 and prior firebirds do not have a "remote dimmer", nor do any thirdgen camaros (except possibly berlinetta). lights in such vehicles are dimmed by having a conventional variable resistor in series with the panel lights.
