Will this work? Hope I dont kill my car!

Well for monthes my brakelights havent worked... Ive liked it LOL people get on my *** and they get the brake check of a lifetime, but... I finally got pulled over for it. So I finally got to fixen it. So
-Replaced rear bulbs
-Replaced fuse
nothing
-Replaced brake light switch (vacuum actuated type)
nothing
so today I tested the switch, with the botton out unpushed (as if you are breaking) both of the leads show current, hey its a good thing! and with the button pushed (if your pedal wasnt pushed) it shows current only on one side.
The tail lights come on, but the break lights dont. Im sick of dicken around so heres my solution.

Splice a wire from the second lead (the one that isnt always on, only when breaking) all the way back to the old wire attached to the breaking portion of the red taillight section. Cut the old wire and connect it to the new wire.
Will this be ok? Am I gonna kill anything?
-Nick
btw I dont know what im doing

This is something from another '80's GM car, but it should apply to yours.

the white wire from the brake switch goes through the turn signal switch in the column. Disconnect the turn signal switch under the column; slot "P" is the input from the white wire, "N" is for right rear, "M" is for left rear.

Jumper the white wire (when brakes are applied) to N or M. If you have brake lights, you need a turn signal switch on the column.

If you know someone with a column out of a similar car, just
plug its turn signal switch plug into your car's harness. If the
problem goes away, then your turn signal switch is bad.

I know this a dumb question but I have to ask. When you put the new bulbs in, did you push them in and turn clockwise? I goofed on this, and it took me an hour to figure it out.
